WHAT HAPPENED
The Friars took a 1-0 lead at the 3:20 mark of the first period on a goal by Erik Foley. The play started when Trevor Mingoia played a pass up to Mark Jankowski in the neutral zone. Jankowski found Foley in UNH territory with a pass. Foley then skated across the top of the crease and fired a low shot to the right of Tirone and into the net.
Senior forward Kyle Smith (Lumberton, N.J.) knotted the score at 1-1 with a power play goal on the first power play opportunity of the night for the 'Cats. The play started with senior Maxim Gaudreault (Annapolis, Md.) firing a shot at the net from just inside the point. While on its way to the net, the puck was tipped by Marcus Vela (Burnaby, British Columbia) off Providence goalie Nick Ellis' pad. The rebound squirted over to Smith who buried his chance.
Just 38 seconds into the second period, senior Dan Correale (Prince George, British Columbia) gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead as he scored his 15th goal of the season. Sophomore Andrew Poturalski (Williamsville, N.Y.) started the play as he dished a pass to junior Tyler Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.) in the slot. Kelleher found Correale to the left of Ellis and ripped a shot into the net.
Smith lit the lamp for the second time of the night at 4:32 of the third period to give UNH a 3-1 lead. The goal came when Vela ripped a shot on net that Ellis saved. The rebound popped up in the air off Ellis' blocker and Smith swatted the puck down and into the net.
