Fitzgerald scores game winner and Chauvette earns shutout
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior defenseman Brendan Fitzgerald (North Reading, Mass.) scored the game winner and senior goalie Kyle Chauvette (Goffstown N.H.) earned his fifth shutout of the season with 23 saves as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team defeated No. 6 Providence, 1-0, on Friday evening at Schneider Arena in Hockey East action.
The Friars had won 12 out of their last 13 games entering tonight's contest and lead the conference with 110 goals.
The Wildcats improve to 14-16-1 (8-12-1 Hockey East), while the Friars fall to 21-9-2 (16-5-1 Hockey East).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first period, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead at 10:11 of the second period when Fitzgerald scored from the slot for his second goal of the season. Sophomore forward Ryan MacPherson (Windsor, Ontario) and junior alternate captain Marty Lavins (Riga, Latvia) each posted an assist on the goal.
- With 2:08 left in the third period, the Friars went with an empty net but were unable to score the equalizer for the 1-0 win for UNH.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Providence outshot UNH, 23-10.
- Each team went 0-2 on the power play.
- Chauvette posted 23 saves for the Wildcats, while Jack Parsons posted nine saves for the Friars.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The shutout by Chauvette was his fifth of the season and the 10th of his career. His five shutouts are tied for first in the nation.
- This is the second straight shutout for Chauvette as he shut out No. 19 UMass on Feb. 21, 1-0. This is the second time this season he has recorded back-to-back shutouts as he also posted shutouts versus Bentley (3-0) on Nov. 29 and at No. 11 Maine (1-0) on Dec. 5.
- UNH is now 94-73-18 all-time versus Providence.
- The last time UNH shut out Providence was on January 6, 2023 with a 2-0 win.
- UNH is now 7-7-0 versus nationally ranked teams and 5-3-0 against ranked teams on the road. The Wildcats are also 4-3-0 against top-10 teams.
- The goal by Fitzgerald was his second game winner of the season and is tied for first on the team.
