Women's Soccer ends defense of America East Championship title.
ORONO, MAINE – Sophomore Nikki Sloan (Stow, Mass.) scored her first Wildcat goal in the opening half but the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team tied with the University of Maine in regulation and fell 4-3 in penalty kicks during the America East Championship quarterfinals, Thursday night at Mahaney Diamond.
The defending America East champion Wildcats were bounced from the tournament, ending the season with a record of 6-9-4 overall. The Black Bears continue their season on Sunday, Nov. 1 at the University of Hartford for the semifinal round.
UNH was led by N. Sloan who scored her first career goal at UNH. Sophomore 2015 America East Striker of the year Brooke Murphy (Stow, Mass.) notched an assist on the lone 'Cats goal. Murphy also rifled six shots. Junior goalkeeper Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) recorded a save in the game including a stop in penalty kicks.
In PKs, Murphy stepped up and buried the first attempt bottom left, followed by Maine's Addie Labonte who matched. Senior Kirsten O'Neil (Hampton, N.H.) had her attempt stopped and the 2015 America East Rookie of the Year Vivien Beil made use of her opportunity to take a 2-1 lead in PKs. Maine's Claudia Dube-Trempe made another save on senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.), the 2015 AE Midfielder of the Year, and Charlene Achille increased the Black Bear PK lead to 3-1. N. Sloan finished her attempt off the right post and Jenna Soucy was robbed by Borkan. Senior Kellie McGoldrick (Ambler, Pa.) buried her chance but Noelle Leon-Palmer scored the dagger with a 4-3 PK advantage and the victory.
New Hampshire scored first in the 16th minute when Murphy crossed a free kick, from 20 yards out, into the box that N. Sloan headed over the keeper and into the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
In the 21st minute, Murray intercepted a Black Bear pass at half and raced down the field where she ripped a shot that was deflected just over the cross bar and out.
O'Neil made a goal-saving play with 18:30 to go in the first half. The Black Bear's Achille beat Borkan on the near side and ripped a close-angle shot that the captain punted out of danger near the front post.
New Hampshire controlled the first half with an 11-4 shot advantage.
Maine equalized in the 63rd minute when Biel put a cross in net which Borkan punched away. The loose ball was ripped back toward goal and redirected on a header through the defense and into the right side. The tally evened the score at one apiece.
The 2015 America East All-Rookie Team member Gaby Dorsey (Hubertus, Wis.) made a diving shot, with 15 minutes left in the half, on a low cross by Murray. The ball rolled just right of the far post with the game still tied at one.
With 16 seconds remaining, Borkan needed to make one more save for the Wildcats. She punched a shot by Kate Evans over the crossbar on a dangerous chance from just outside the goalie box to end regulation tied.
In the first overtime period, Murphy ripped a free kick from 25 yards out that drilled the crossbar and bounced up and out of play for a Maine possession in the 91st minute.
The Wildcats held a 22-10 shot advantage throughout the game.
