Correale Nets Hat Trick as Men’s Hockey Ties UMass, 6-6

Kelleher, Poturalski Each Tally Four Points
AMHERST, Mass. – Senior alternate captain Dan Correale (Prince George, British Columbia) recorded his first career hat trick as the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team played to a 6-6 tie at the University of Massachusetts Friday night. The game was played at the Mullins Center on the campus of UMass.
The draw brings the Wildcats to 1-2-1 overall and to 0-0-1 in Hockey East action. The Minutemen now stand at 3-0-1 and 0-0-1 in conference play. Sophomore Andrew Poturalski (Williamsville, N.Y.) recorded four points (1g, 3a) while junior Tyler Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.) dished out four assists. Senior captain Collin MacDonald (West Milford, N.J.) scored his first goal of the season while freshman forward Chris Miller (Windham, N.H.) potted the first goal of his career.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead on Correale's second goal of the season just 1:13 into the first period. The play started as Poturalski gathered the puck in the neutral zone. He slid a pass to Kelleher who then found Correale skating up the opposite side with a tape-to-tape pass. Correale skated in and beat UMass netminder Henry Dill with a backhanded shot.
The Minutemen tied the game with 15:21 left in the first period on a goal by Ryan Badger. UMass' Patrick Lee sent a pass to Keith Burchett in the corner to the left of UNH goalie Danny Tirone (Trumbull, Conn.) Burchett played a pass to Badger in the slot who fired a shot that beat Tirone high.
UNH regained the lead with 1:32 left in the first period as Poturalski netted his second goal of the season. Sophomore Richard Boyd (Delray Beach, Fla.) started the play with a pass up ice to Kelleher in the neutral zone. Kelleher dished the puck to Poturalski who was to the left of Dill and fired a wrister high into the goal. The play came after UMass nearly got a goal on the other end of the ice just seconds before. The UMass play was reviewed and the call on the ice stood and UNH held a 2-1 lead.
Correale struck again just 12 seconds after Poturalski on a power play, scoring his second goal of the night and third of the season. Kelleher sent a pass to Poturalski who found Correale on the back post. Correale knocked the puck into the net in the low left corner for the 3-1 lead.
At the end of the first period, the Wildcats held a 3-1 lead.
MacDonald gave New Hampshire a 4-1 lead at the 4:04 mark of the second period with his first goal of the season. The play came when MacDonald intercepted a Minutemen pass and fired a shot that beat Dill.
Correale netted his first hat trick of his career at the 11:57 mark of the second period with his fourth goal of the season. Kelleher skated into the UMass zone with the puck on a 2-on-1 play. Kelleher found Correale on the far side who one-timed Kelleher's pass into the goal.
Miller notched the first goal of his career in the first game of his career with 5:05 left in the second period on a blast that hit the post and bounced into the net. Sophomore forward Shane Eiserman (Newburyport, Mass.) dished the pass to Miller so originate the play. Following Miller's goal, Dill was pulled in favor of UMass goalie Nic Renyard.
The Minutement scored with 3:35 left in the second period on a goal by Ray Pigozzi. His tally came from Marc Hetnik to make the score 6-2.
The second period came to a close with UNH leading UMass, 6-2.
UMass chipped away at the Wildcats' lead as the Minutemen would score four goals in the third period to bring the game to a 6-6 tie. Anthony Peterlla made the score 6-3 at the 3:03 mark of the third while Dennis Kravchenko brought UMass to withian two goals at 8:06. Shane Walsh made it 6-5 with a power play goal at 14:48 and Dominic Trento tied the game at 17:20 with another power play goal.
After 65 minutes of play, the game was finalized at 6-6. Tirone made 26 save in the game as his record now stands at 1-2-1 on the year. Dill allowed all six goals in 34:55 of play while Reynard got the decision after playing 30:05 of relief. He made eight saves.
The Wildcats are back on the ice on Saturday, Oct. 24 as the team travels to Union College in Schnectedy, N.Y. Puck drop is set for 7:30 at Messa Rink.
