Joshua Hoffman (Litchfield, N.H.) of the UNH men's track & field team successfully defended his discus title at the New England Outdoor Championships, which was held May 12-13 at Solomon Outdoor Track (Dedham, Mass.).
The junior, who entered the meet with a top seed of 54.67 meters (2.65m farther than the next entrant), won the New England discus title with a mark of 55.21m (181 feet, 2 inches). Joshua advanced out of the preliminaries with a top throw of 53.96m through three rounds. In the first of three throws in the finals, he tossed the discus 55.21m and that stood as the winning mark.
The runner-up in the field of 23 throwers recorded a best of 51.87m, which also calculates to 11 feet less than Joshua’s best effort.
New Englands marked the first time in six outdoor meets this season that Joshua topped 55 meters. His previous best in 2023 was 54.67m at the UConn Northeast Challenge (April 14-15).
The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field First Round is May 24-27 at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
