WORCESTER, Mass. — The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team skated to a win over Assumption University on Saturday evening at Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Arena, routing the Greyhounds 3-0.
The 'Cats found the lead just past the eight-minute mark in the first period, when freshman defenseman Aurora Kahlert (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) took a feed from senior captain Kelly Harty (Billerica, Mass.) and fired from the left face-off circle, beating Assumption's Maria Suarez top corner for her first collegiate goal.
Neither team broke onto the scoreboard in the middle frame, leaving New Hampshire's 1-0 lead intact. Junior goaltender Noemi Martinez (Glen Ridge, N.J.) stood tall in the second period, halting all ten attempts from Assumption's offense.
UNH doubled their lead midway through the third period, when Harty found junior defenseman Sadie Makokis (St. Albert, Alberta) positioned on the blue line, who ripped a shot past Suarez to give the 'Cats the 2-0 lead. In the waning minutes of the frame while shorthanded, Harty collected the puck and fired on the empty net, securing her third point of the night and finalizing the 3-0 score.
In the win, Harty became the third Wildcat with a career-best three-point performance on the weekend, following in the footsteps of freshman Nina Rossi (Pittsgrove, N.J.) (2-1-3) and senior Alyson Hush (Scarborough, Ontario) (0-3-3), who earned three points apiece in the team's 5-1 win over the Greyhounds on Oct. 3.
With 21 saves on the night, Martinez logged her second career shutout to accompany her first win of the season between the pipes.
