Paul Chapman enters his 24th year as the Director of Athletic Performance.
Chapman has trained and developed over twenty-five NHL players, including James van Riemsdyk, Trevor van Riemsdyk, and Brett Pesce. He has also developed over twenty NCAA All-Americans and was instrumental in helping UNH qualify for eleven NCAA Tournament appearances, two Hockey East titles, and five regular-season Hockey East titles.
Chapman is currently designing a new state-of-the-art Training and Performance Center as part of the $20 million upgrades to the Whittemore Center hockey arena. He also coordinated the building of the Jerry Azumah Performance Center in 2003 and oversaw significant upgrades to the center in 2010 and 2019.
He is a member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and he served as the state director of the National Strength and Conditioning Association in North Dakota from 1991 to 1995. In 2005, he earned the title of Master Strength and Conditioning Coach from the CSCCA. He has also authored numerous publications related to strength and conditioning and athlete performance.
Before UNH, Chapman was the director of strength and conditioning for the University of North Dakota from 1992 to 2001. His efforts were an integral part of a hockey-winning tradition at UND; the men’s ice hockey team won a Division I national title in 1997 and 2000.
Chapman is a 1990 graduate of Dickinson State University in North Dakota with a B.S. degree in Biology. He then went on to earn an M.S. in Exercise Science from the University of North Dakota in 1994.
An outstanding college athlete, Chapman was inducted into the Dickinson State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000 for his contributions to the football team as an offensive lineman. He was a two-time First-Team All-American selection, as well as a Second-Team All-American honoree, during his four-year playing career. Upon graduation, he was a fourth-round draft choice of the Saskatchewan Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League, where he played for two seasons.
Paul and his wife, Kimberly, live in Somersworth, N.H., and are the proud parents of their son, Tyler, and their daughter, Brittani.
