Taranto Scores 75th Career Goal in 19-8 Loss to Dartmouth

DURHAM, N.H. – Grad student Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) recorded three goals and two assists but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 19-8 by Dartmouth College on Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.
Senior Grace Curran (North Salem, N.Y.) finished with three goals and an assist to record season highs in both goals and points (four). Graduate student Hannah McCarthy (Bedford, N.H.) and senior Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) scored UNH's other goals.
UNH goalkeeper Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) was credited with 10 saves.
Dartmouth's offense was led by Katina Christensen and Maja Desmond, both of whom tallied four goals and one assist. Fiona O'Keeffe also had five points with three goals and two assists. DC starting goalie Gisele Todd made seven saves and allowed three goals in 36 minutes, 10 seconds to earn the win. Tamer Luzi was credited with one save in 23:50.
UNH is now 2-8 overall and Dartmouth is 6-3.

FIRST QUARTER
- The Wildcats came out strong in the first 15 seconds of the game with a goal by Taranto, her 75th career goal, off Curran's pass to give UNH an early 1-0 lead.
- The Big Green scored 40 seconds later, making it 1-1 on a goal by O'Keeffe.
- The score remained a tie for next six minutes until Dartmouth's Christensen scored to put the Big Green in the lead, 2-1, at 7:39.
- Two goals by Desmond sandwiched around one from Christensen put the Big Green in the lead 5-1 with 1:18 left in the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- UNH scored the first goal of the second quarter on a free-position shot by Curran for her second point of the game.
- Shortly after, Desmond scored her third goal of the game to extend the Dartmouth lead to 6-2 at 11:57.
- Dartmouth scored four goals within the next five minutes to build a 10-2 lead.
- With 5:13 on the clock, McCarthy scored on a free-position shot to lift the Wildcats within 10-3.
- O'Keeffe scored again for the Big Green at 3:45 and the half ended with Dartmouth in the lead, 11-3.
THIRD QUARTER
- There were no goals scored in the first six minutes of the quarter and then Christensen scored her fourth goal of the game to give the visitors a 12-3 lead at 8:50.
- Taranto scored the only goal for UNH during the third quarter – her second of the game – off a pass from Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) at 7:16.
- O'Keeffe scored her third goal of the game with 5:04 on the clock and Donohue's goal at 3:55 pushed the margin to double digits, 14-4.
FOURTH QUARTER
- MacEachern scored the first goal of the fourth quarter off of a free-position shot to trim the margin to single figures, 14-5, at 13:38.
- Thirty-four seconds later, Curran scored her second goal of the game – this time off Taranto's pass – to lift UNH within 14-6.
- Donohue, Haley Riabov, Desmond and Catherine Erb each scored to extend the advantage to 18-6 at 6:02.
- Taranto, once again set up by Connerty, scored her third goal of the game with 4:24 on the clock.
- With 1:03 remaining, Curran also scored her third goal of the game to cap the scoring.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Dartmouth finished with the lead in shots (44-21), as well as draw controls (20-11) and ground balls (12-10).
- The Big Green committed three fewer turnovers (11-14).
- UNH scored on 3 of 6 free position shots. DC was 1-for-3.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Taranto scored her 75th career goal with the first of her three goals and increased her total to 77 to solidify her position as UNH's active leader in goals.
- She matched her career high of two assists.
- Taranto and Connerty both have 91 career points.
- MacEachern achieved her 88th career point.
- Curran also reached a milestone by recording her 50th point asa Wildcat; she now has 40 goals and 13 assists for 53 points as a 'Cat and 63 career points overall.
- Leading the charge for UNH, Taranto had five points.
- Julia Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) tallied a team-high three ground balls. She was also the top 'Cat with three caused turnovers, which matched her personal best.
- Curran took charge in shots for UNH by unleashing a total of seven.
- This was Hagan's fourth game of the season with 10+ saves.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 13-30 lifetime record against Dartmouth College, which has won 11 straight in the series dating back to UNH's 9-8 home win in February 2010.
