Taranto Scores Five Goals in 12-11 Loss to Iona

DURHAM, N.H. – Graduate student Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) scored five goals but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was edged 12-11 by Iona University at Wildcat Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.; one goal, two assists), Dylan Lyons (Orange, Conn.; two goals), Grace Curran (North Salem, N.Y.; two assists) Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.; two assists) also finished with multiple points for the Wildcats.
UNH goalkeeper Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) was credited with eight saves.
Iona was led offensively by Emily Stewart (4g, 1a) and Maliya Haddock (1g, 1a). Lauren Sweeney made 11 saves.
UNH is now 2-4 overall and Iona is 3-1.

FIRST QUARTER
- UNH took a 1-0 lead on a free-position goal by Rose Pavuk (York, Maine) at 14:05.
- Iona scored goals 16 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead at 11:28.
- The Wildcats ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to build a 6-2 advantage.
- Taranto scored consecutive goals at 5:36 and 3:20 to put the 'Cats back in front, 3-2.
- Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.) converted a pass from Curran, who also set up Taranto's second goal, to push the score to 4-2 at 1:24.
- Hannah McCarthy (Bedford, N.H.) scored on a free position with 22 seconds on the clock and Taranto struck again 10 seconds later to close UNH's late flurry.
SECOND QUARTER
- Iona responded with six consecutive second-quarter goals to surge back in front, 8-6.
- Taranto once again scored back-to-back goals – this time at 5:29 and 1:10 – to level the score heading into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- The Gaels scored three goals in the first three minutes of the third quarter to build an 11-8 lead.
- Connerty's goal trimmed the deficit to 11-9 at 9:32, then she set up Lyons' goal at 1:21.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Lyons struck again, this time off a pass from MacEachern, to one again forge a tie, 11-11, at 13:04 of the fourth quarter.
- Micaela FitzPatrick scored what proved to be the game's last goal when she gave Iona a 12-11 lead at 5:42.
- Sweeney stopped Pavuk's shot at 4:42 and made one more save with 39 seconds left to secure Iona's win.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH finished with the edge in shots (27-26), shots on goal (22-20), ground balls (15-12) and turnovers (13-16).
- Iona had a 15-12 advantage in draw controls.
- UNH was 20-for-21 on clear attempts while the Gaels were 15 of 20.
- Iona scored on 2 of 3 free positions shots; the 'Cats were 2-for-7.
