MacEachern Scores Three Goals in 17-11 Loss to Vermont

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) scored a team-high three goals but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was upended 17-11 by the University of Vermont at Wildcat Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
MacEachern's three points also led the Wildcats, who received two goals from both Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.) and Hannah McCarthy (Bedford, N.H.). Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) was credited with two assists.
UNH goalkeeper Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) made five saves.
UVM was led by Ava Vasile's eight points on seven goals and an assist. Jane Trauger finished with two goals and two assists. Vermont goalie Anna Rosenberger stopped eight shots.
UNH is now 2-6 overall and 0-1 in America East. Vermont is 6-3, 1-0.

FIRST QUARTER
- UNH recorded an 11-6 shot advantage in the opening 15 minutes to take a 6-5 lead.
- Julia Gronda (Pompton Plains, N.J.) gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead 30 seconds into the game when she dodged a defender from 15 yards to break down the middle and score on a low shot.
- Vasile scored back-to-back goals to give UVM a 2-1 lead at 13:26.
- McCarthy responded with consecutive goals 45 seconds apart to put the home 'Cats back in front.
- From behind the right post, Connerty hit the cutting McCarthy down the near side and she quickly fired a high shot inside the right post to tie the score at 11:59.
- McCarthy then converted a free position from the top-right hash to give UNH a 3-2 lead at 11:14.
- On a curl from the left side, Dunn doubled back from the middle to the left side and shot low ingo the goal to extend the advantage to 4-2 at 10:11.
- After Vasile lifted UVM within 4-3, MacEachern sliced down the middle of the fan and deposited a shot into the bottom-right corner to reestablish a two-goal lead, 5-3, at 8:09.
- The Catamounts netted goals at 6:44 and 4:22 to level the score, 5-5.
- On a free position from the left hash, Dunn cut back behind a defender to the middle of the fan and shot low into the net to put UNH back on top, 6-5, at 1:22.
SECOND QUARTER
- UVM held the slimmest of margins, 6-5, in shots in the second quarter but outscored New Hampshire 5-0 in the quarter to take a 10-6 lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- Both teams scored three goals in the third quarter.
- Connerty, once again behind the net on the right side, connected with MacEachern at the 8-meter and she attacked the net to score and trim the deficit to 10-7 at 14:18.
- UVM scored the next three goals, however, to push the advantage to 13-7 at 4:32.
- MacEachern sidestepped a defender at the top of the 8-meter and ripped a low shot inside the right post to score her third goal of the game and lift the Wildcats within 13-8 at 3:07.
- On a free position from the top-right, Kate O'Rourke (Franklin, Mass.) sailed a high shot inside the near post to make it 13-9 at 1:27.
FOURTH QUARTER
- The shots were level, 5-5, in the fourth quarter but the visiting 'Cats outscored New Hampshire 4-2 in the final 15 minutes to secure the win.
- UNH's Olivia O'Connor (Hopkinton, Mass.) forced a turnover near midfield, where Grace Curran (North Salem, N.Y.) corralled the ground ball, slipped past a defender at the 12-meter and another at the 8-meter before firing a low shot into the goal to lift the Wildcats within 13-10 at 9:42.
- UVM went on a 3-0 run the next minutes, however, to open at 16-10 advantage at 3:26.
- On a free position from the left hashmark, Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) charged the next, then tapped her feet outside of the goalie crease to avoid the turnover and placed a shot under the crossbar to lift UNH within 16-11 at 2:29.
- Vasile scored an unassisted goal in transition with 16 seconds left to cap the scoring.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH had a 25-24 edge in shots but UVM had the 22-19 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Wildcats dominated draw controls, 21-11.
- Vermont had an 18-10 edge in ground balls.
- The Catamounts committed two fewer turnovers (14-16).
- UNH was a perfect 13 of 13 on clear attempts. UVM was 17-for-21.
- The Wildcats scored on 4 of 9 free-position shots. Vermont scored on its only free-position shot of the game.
- UVM was assessed nine cards – five green and four yellow. UNH had three green cards and one yellow.
- New Hampshire converted those cards into four player-up goals. The Catamounts had two.

- In addition to scoring a team-high three goals, MacEachern recorded a game-high eight draw controls to match her career high established March 2022 at Iona University.
- O'Connor was next with a personal best of seven draws.
- Izzy Holmes (Seattle, Wash.) controlled five draws.
- Dunn and Ava Schroeder (Niskayuna, N.Y.) tied atop the team leaderboard with two ground balls apiece.
- Julia Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) led the Wildcats with two caused turnovers.
- Dunn now has 104 career points on 62 goals and 42 assists.
