Taranto Scores Twice in 17-5 Loss to UConn

DURHAM, N.H. – Graduate student Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) and senior Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) recorded two points apiece but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 17-5 by the University of Connecticut on Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.
Taranto finished with two goals while MacEachern tallied a goal and an assist. The other Wildcat goals were scored by sophomore Audrey Mirak (Concord, Mass) and freshman Dylan Lyons (Orange, Conn.).
UNH goalkeeper Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) was credited with 10 saves.
Kate Shaffer (five goals, one assist) and Susan Lafountain (two goals, three assists) led the Huskies' offense. Starting goalie Landyn White made nine saves and allowed four goals in 51:50 to earn the win; Sofia Oximana stopped two of three shots on goal the final 8:10.
UNH is now 2-3 overall and UConn is 1-3.

FIRST QUARTER
- Shaffer gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 11:47 on a free-position shot.
- Shaffer scored another for a 2-0 lead with 8:08 left in the quarter.
- Taranto scored the first goal for UNH – her 11th of the season – at 7:14 on a rising sidewinder from six meters.
- Shortly after, Shaffer scored another for the Huskies to build a 3-1 advantage at 6:44.
- MacEachern was awarded a free position and scored on a shot to the bottom-right corner at 4:11 to cut the lead down to one.
- UConn scored two goals in a three-minute span to extend the lead to 5-0 near the end of the quarter.
- Hagan recorded a five saves through 15 minutes to keep the 'Cats close.
SECOND QUARTER
- The Huskies scored six goals in the quarter to end the half with a 11-2 advantage.
THIRD QUARTER
- There were no goals scored in the first four minutes of the third quarter.
- Morgan Carter's goal at 10:56 pushed the margin to double digits, 12-2, at 10:56.
- Audrey Mirak (Concord, Mass) scored her second goal of the season off a free position from the left side and shot inside the far post at 4:24.
- The quarter ended with UConn leading 15-3.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Both teams scored two goals during the fourth quarter.
- Taranto scored her second goal of the game on a free-position shot from the left side inside the near post at 8:10.
- Dylan Lyons (Orange, Conn.) scored with 2:30 on the clock when she caught a pass from MacEachern and scored from five meters.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UConn finished with the edge in shots (32-21), shots on goal (27-16), draw controls (17-7) and ground balls (19-13).
- The Huskies also committed one less turnover (14-15).
- UConn was 14 of 19 on clear attempts in comparison to UNH's 15-for-18.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Julia Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) tallied a team-high three ground balls.
- Taranto scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season. She also has a high of 14 points.
- In addition to her two points, MacEachern tied for the team lead in draw controls (two) and also had a pair of ground balls.
- Olivia O'Connor (Hopkinton, Mass.) also had two draw controls.
- Mirak and Lyons both scored their second goal of the season.
