McCarthy's Three Goals Leads UNH Past Detroit Mercy, 12-11

DURHAM, N.H. – Grad student Hannah McCarthy (Bedford, N.H.) scored three goals to propel the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory in Saturday's home opener against University of Detroit Mercy at Wildcat Stadium.
Grad student Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.) and classmate Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) each contributed two goals for the Wildcats. Dunn scored the game winner. Junior Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) also had two points with a goal and an assist.
UNH goalkeeper Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) finished with a season-high 12 saves. Titans' goalie Meredith Leavell had 10 saves and Cat Kopchia scored four goals.

FIRST QUARTER
- McCarthy started the 'Cats in scoring at 12:22 to give the home team a 1-0 lead with her seventh of the season.
- Less than a minute later, Detroit Mercy received a green card and McCarthy scored off a free position shot for a 2-0 lead at 11:40.
- At 8:46, UDM's Kopchia scored a free-position goal to trim the deficit to one goal.
- Abby Schillinger tied the game up for the Titans, 2-2, with 13 seconds left in the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- Detroit Mercy took the 3-2 lead 2:27 into the quarter on a goal by Kopchia.
- Taranto drove into the middle and fired the ball to the high-left corner of the net for the Wildcats to tie the game, 3-3, at 9:35.
- Connerty passed the ball from the back of the net to Kate O'Rourke (Franklin, Mass.), who scored for the 'Cats to regain the lead, 4-3, at 8:05.
- Rose Pavuk (York, Maine) was passed the ball in the middle of the fan and scored at 6:27 to extend the advantage to 5-3. Olivia O'Connor (Hopkinton, Mass.) was credited with the assist.
THIRD QUARTER
- Connerty wrapped around the crease to score at 11:14 of the third quarter to give UNH a 6-3 lead.
- Grace Curran (North Salem, N.Y.) passed from the side of the net to McCarthy, who scored on a sidearm shot to boost the Wildcats' lead to 7-3 at 10:31.
- At 8:59, Dunn scored an unassisted goal from the middle of the arc to push the margin to five goals, 8-3.
- UDM's Julia Fortino scored of a pass from Libby Cuckler to stop UNH's scoring 6-0 scoring run and lift the visitors within 8-4 at 6:18
- Taranto ran towards the left side of the net, squeezed past her defender to get in front of the goalie and scored her second goal of the game at 5:31 to advance the score to 9-4.
- Alyssa Jarvis cut into the middle of the fan, received a pass from Leah Bodnar, then scored for the Titans at 2:50.
- Erin Fagan (Clarksburg, Md.) scored a free-position goal at 1:46 to give the 'Cats a 10-5 lead.
- Kopchia scored her third goal of the game with 12 seconds left in the quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Bodnar passed from the front right-side of the net to Jarvis, who scored from there at 11:54 to lift the Titans within 10-7.
- Abby Hawkes (Amherst, N.H.) scored a free-position goal at 10:57 to extend the advantage to four goals.
- Fortino fired the ball into the net for a free-position goal and, from the top of the arc, Kopchia scored again for the Titans to pull the visitors within 11-9.
- Libby Cuckler shortened the Wildcats' lead to one goal, 11-10, when she scored a free-position goal at 6:34.
- Dunn extended the Wildcats lead to 12-11 when she scored an unassisted goal at 3:05.
- Bodner scored her first goal of the season at 2:33 to once again lift the Titans within a goal, 12-11.
- UDM won the ensuing draw control, but Hagan denied Bodnar to preserve the one-goal lead.
- The Titans retained possession, but then Ava Schroeder (Niskayuna, N.Y.) caused a turnover and corralled the ground ball with 80 seconds remaining.
- New Hampshire maintained possession the rest of the way to secure the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Both teams took 31 shots. UDM had a 23-22 edge in shots on goal.
- UNH had the advantage in ground balls (20-16) and draw controls (15-12).
- The Titans were 16-for-20 in clear attempts while UNH was 12 of 16.
- The Wildcats committed 13 turnovers in comparison to the visitor's 17.
- Both teams were credited with eight caused turnovers.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Schroeder led all players in both ground balls (five) and caused turnovers (three). Both those numbers are career highs.
- In her collegiate debut, Piper Boudreau (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded a team-high seven draw controls.
- O'Rourke and Pavuk scored their first goals of the season.
- Connerty has UNH's longest active point streak of 20 games.
- Taranto extended her goal and point streak to 17 games. She has a team high of 10 goals this season.
- Connerty recorded her 50th career assist.
- McCarthy has scored three goals each of her first three games as a UNH Wildcat.
- Fagan has scored a goal each of her first three games as a collegian.
- Dunn has scored at least one goal in each of the first three games.
- Curran has recorded at least one point in the first three games.
