Alex Gagne is only the sixth two-time captain in program history
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's hockey program has announced the captains for the 2024-25 season. Senior defenseman Alex Gagne (Bedford, N.H.) is the team captain for the second consecutive season, while graduate student defenseman Nikolai Jenson (Cold Spring, Minn.) and senior forward Connor Sweeney (North Andover, Mass.) are alternate captains.
Gagne is just the sixth two-time captain in program history joining William Johnston (1953-55), Douglas Cowie (1956-58), Graham Bruder (1967-69), James Richmond (1985-87) and Patrick Foley (2002-04).
Gagne has three goals and 28 assists for 31 points over 104 games as a Wildcat. Last season, he earned Hockey East Third Team All-Conference and New England All-Star honors. He was also the runner-up for the Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman Award. Gagne won the team's Roger A. LeClerc Most Valuable Player Award, Rod Langway Best Defenseman Award and the Whoop Snively Citizenship Award. He was also a leader in the classroom earning CSC Academic All-District and Hockey East All-Academic Team accolades.
This is also the second straight season that Jenson will serve as an alternate captain. He has recorded six goals and 20 assists for 26 points during 118 contests. Last season, Jenson won the team's Robert A. Kullen Unsung Player Award for the second straight year, while he earned the Rod Langway Best Defenseman Award in 2023.
Sweeney has appeared in 88 career games for the Wildcats with seven assists for seven points. Over the last two seasons, Sweeney has played in 66 of the 71 games. He has been an outstanding leader on and off the ice and has been strong in the classroom earning Hockey East All-Academic Team honors all three years.
