Connerty, MacEachern Record Three Points Apiece in 14-8 Loss at Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) and Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) recorded three points apiece but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 14-8 by Sacred Heart University at Campus Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Connerty finished with three assists while MacEachern recorded a goal and season-high two assists to match her season high of three points. Izzy Holmes (Seattle, Wash.), Grace Curran (North Salem, N.Y.) and Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) scored two goals apiece.
Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) made eight saves and was charged with 13 goals in 56:23 of action. Danielle Martineau (Gilford, N.H.) played the final 3:37 and was not credited with a save.
SHU was led offensively by Lydia Werlau (seven goals, one assist) and Emma Kittredge (one goal, three assists), while Juliana Henry made six saves.
Both UNH and Sacred Heart move to 1-5.

FIRST QUARTER
- The Pioneers led 3-0 with a 9-3 shot advantage through 15 minutes.
- Kittredge struck first at 12:25 and the score remained 1-0 until Werlau's goal at 1:23.
- Maggie Araneo scored with 19 seconds on the clock to give the home team a three-goal lead.
SECOND QUARTER
- Sacred Heart outscored the Wildcats 4-3 on a 9-7 shot advantage in the second quarter.
- Grace Reinold extended the margin to 4-0 at 13:14,
- From the right wing, Connerty found Taranto cutting to the front of the net to pull UNH within 4-1 at 11:45,
- SHU scored three goals in a 92-second span to quickly build a 7-1 lead at 9:20.
- Off a turnover, MacEachern scooped up a ground ball near midfield and found Rose Pavuk (York, Maine) behind the defense to set up a 1-v-1 against Henry, and Pavuk won that showdown to lift the Wildcats within 7-2 at 4:08.
- Holmes dodged past a defender from the top of the 8-meter to score a woman-up goal that pulled the 'Cats within 7-3 at 2:40.
- Emma Magazu (Newtown, Conn.) caused a turnover and corralled the ground ball in the closing second to keep the margin at four goals heading into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- UNH continued momentum in the third quarter. Taranto, off MacEachern's pass from the top of the 8-meter, dropped low to fire a shot from the middle of the fan into the cage at 11:52.
- MacEachern cut across the middle of the fan and finished low on the right side to lift UNH within 7-5 at 9:46.
- SHU responded with three consecutive goals to build a 10-5 lead at 3:34.
- Holmes split three defenders to strike again and trim the deficit to 10-6 at 2:44.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Werlau advanced the score to 11-6 at 10:16, which prompted UNH to call time out.
- The Wildcats responded with Curran's goal in front off a feed by Connerty at 8:41.
- SHU reestablished a five-goal lead, 12-7, at 7:49.
- Connerty once again found Curran in front for another goal at 4:46.
- The Pioneers controlled the ensuing draw, however, and Werlau scored at 3:37. The home team also won the next draw control and Werlau capped the scoring at 1:45.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Sacred Heart recorded the edge in shots (35-19), shots on goal (22-14), ground balls (22-15) and turnovers (15-19).
- UNH had the edge in draw controls (13-12).
- The Wildcats were successful on 14 of 15 clear attempts; SHU was 16-for-21.
- The 'Cats were 0-for-3 on free-position shots while the Pioneers went 1-for-3.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Magazu was credited with a career-high three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
- Ava Schroeder (Niskayuna, N.Y.) finished with a career-high four ground balls and one caused turnover.
- Emma Alpaugh (Darien, Conn.) led the 'Cats with a career-high five draw controls. She also had two ground balls.
- MacEachern also tallied five draw controls and two ground balls.
- Connerty extended the team's longest active point streak to eight games.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 4-1 lifetime record against Sacred Heart that includes 2-1 on the road.
