Taranto Records Five Points in 15-11 Win at UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) recorded a game-high five points to lead the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team to Saturday afternoon's 15-11 America East victory against UMass Lowell at Cushing Field.
Taranto finished with four goals and an assist while Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.) tallied two goals and two assists for a total of four points. Izzy Holmes (Seattle, Wash.) and Grace Curran (North Salem, N.Y.) both scored three goals, and Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) also had three points with a goal and team-high two assists.
Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) and Olivia O'Connor (Hopkinton, Mass.) both scored one goal. Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) was credited with seven saves.
UML was led by Audra Hansen and Molly Shaw with four goals apiece. Hannah Shaddock made nine saves.
UNH is now 2-5 overall and 1-0 in America East while UMass Lowell is 5-4, 0-1.

FIRST QUARTER
- UNH led 5-1 with a 9-6 shot advantage through 15 minutes.
- Dunn gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 12:24 and Connerty scored a free-position goal 54 seconds later to extend the advantage to 2-0 at 11:30.
- Taranto struck 25 seconds later and again at 8:38 to push the margin to 4-0.
- Holmes extended the game-opening run to five consecutive goals with a tally at 7:44.
- UMass Lowell's Hansen scored with 1:40 on the clock to trim the deficit to 5-1.
SECOND QUARTER
- UNH outscored the hosts 4-3 in the second quarter; the shots were even at 8-8.
- The Wildcats converted a woman-up advantage into a free-position goal by Curran to build a 6-1 lead at 14:04.
- Abby McLaughlin responded with a goal on a free position to lift the River Hawks within 6-2 at 11:32.
- Curran struck again on another woman-up advantage – this time off a pass from Dunn – to reestablish a five-goal lead, 7-2, at 5:37.
- Hansen and Megan Brockbank scored goals 26 seconds apart to pull UML within 7-4 at 4:22.
- UNH also scored twice in a 26-second span on goals by Holmes (from Connerty) and Taranto at 2:04 and 1:38, respectively, to give the Wildcats a 9-4 lead heading into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- Both teams scored three goals in the third quarter to advance the score to 12-7 through 45 minutes.
- The 'Cats built an 11-4 advantage on consecutive goals by Dunn 13:44 and MacEachern at 11:30.
- UML closed within 11-6 at 7:49.
- Taranto's fourth goal of the game gave UNH a 12-6 lead at 5:51.
- Hansen struck again with 55 seconds on the clock to make it 12-7.
FOURTH QUARTER
- The River Hawks outscored UNH 4-3 in the final frame but never got closer than three goals.
- Holmes scored her third goal of the game to push the advantage to six goals, 13-7, at 13:41.
- UMass Lowell reeled off three consecutive goals to close within 13-10 at 8:37.
- Emma Alpaugh (Darien, Conn.) controlled the ensuing draw, however, and that led to Taranto feeding Curran for a goal and 14-10 lead at 7:06.
- Shaw's goal at 5:01 trimmed the deficit to 14-11 at 5:01.
- UML won the ensuing draw control, but UNH regained possession off a River Hawks' green card at 4:11.
- Connerty then set up O'Connor for the Wildcats' third woman-up goal of the game and a 15-11 lead at 3:32.
- Emma Magazu (Newtown, Conn.) created a caused turnover with Jesslyn Hounchell (Cornwall, Vt.) gathering the ground ball at 2:26 and UNH maintained possession the rest of the way to secure the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH finished with a 31-26 shot advantage that included 24-18 on goal.
- The Wildcats also had the edge in draw controls, 15-14.
- UML had a 22-14 advantage in ground balls.
- Turnovers were even at 17.
- Both teams had two failed clears; UNH was 21 of 23 and UML went 17-for-19 on clear attempts.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Alpaugh finished with a career- and game-high seven draw controls; she also corralled three ground balls.
- Magazu finished with a career-high four ground balls as well as two caused turnovers.
- Holmes matched her career high of three goals established earlier this season vs. Merrimack College.
- Payton Maddaloni (Mattituck, N.Y.) matched a personal best of two ground balls.
- In addition to scoring a goal, MacEachern had five draw controls and two ground balls.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 7-1 lifetime record against UMass Lowell that includes 4-1 on the road.
- New Hampshire prevailed 12-7 last year at Wildcat Stadium.
