Taranto and Sventy Power 13-8 Comeback Win at Columbia

NEW YORK – Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) and Sydney Sventy (Lumberton, N.J.) scored five and four goals, respectively, to lead the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team to Thursday afternoon's 13-8 victory against Columbia University at Robert K. Kraft Field.
Taranto also tallied an assist to match her career high of six points.
Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.) was the other Wildcat who recorded multiple points with two goals. Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) and Kate O'Rourke (Franklin, Mass.) both scored one goal while Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) and Izzy Holmes (Seattle, Wash.) each had an assist.
Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) was credited with seven saves and one ground ball. She held Columbia scoreless the final 34 minutes, 39 seconds of the game.
The Lions were led by Cordella Flemming and Ellie Taylor, both of whom tallied two goals and an assist. Ella Sangree made six saves and had three ground balls.
UNH, which ended the game on a 10-0 run to erase an 8-3 deficit, is now 3-6 overall while Columbia is 3-7.

FIRST QUARTER
- Columbia led 5-3 with a 9-7 shot advantage through the opening 15 minutes.
- The Lions roared out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Annalisa Massaro at 13:03 and Dani Falcone at 10:25 and 9:40.
- O'Rourke scored her first career goal on a drive from the top of the 8-meter that she finished with a low shot between Sangree's legs to trim the deficit to 3-1 at 7:05.
- Dunn lifted the Wildcats within 3-2 at 4:57 when she corralled a loose ball at the top of the crease and fired a shot inside the right post.
- Taranto leveled the score, 3-3, at 1:52 with a close-range high shot off a drive from the top-left of the fan.
- Taylor put Columbia back in front, 4-3, at 1:07 and Cecelia Messner scored with 18 seconds on the clock to extend the margin to two goals.
SECOND QUARTER
- Columbia also opened the second quarter on a 3-0 run to extend the advantage to 8-3 at 4:39. And that proved to be the Lions' last goal of the game.
- Sventy scored her first collegiate goal at 4:20 to trim the margin to 8-4. She rolled from behind the cage to the right side, beat the defender with an inside move and fired a shot high into the goal.
- She struck again at 1:48 when she ripped a shot from the right side of the fan into the cage to lift the 'Cats within 8-5.
THIRD QUARTER
- UNH outscored the hosts 5-0 with a 9-6 shot advantage in the third quarter.
- From the top-left of the fan, Taranto pivoted back to the middle to score her 25th goal of the season and make it 8-6 at 7:31.
- Dunn ripped a low shot from the top of the 8-meter to pull UNH within one goal, 8-7, at 5:38.
- Sventy scored 38 seconds later to level the score, 8-8, as she curled behind the net around the right post and scored on a bounce shot from the middle of the fan.
- Taranto extended UNH's run to 6-0 by converting a free position from the top of the fan to give the 'Cats their first lead of the game at 1:30.
- Taranto scored her third goal of the quarter on another free position – this time from the left side – to extend the advantage to 10-8 with 49 seconds on the clock.
FOURTH QUARTER
- New Hampshire limited Columbia to one shot in the final 15 minutes to secure the victory.
- In the middle of the fan, MacEachern finished a feed from Connerty to push the advantage to 11-8 at 13:42.
- Taranto's fifth goal of the game gave the 'Cats a 12-8 lead at 8:35.
- Columbia called a time out at 6:24, but Hagan stopped Fleming's shot at 6:17 to preserve the four-goal lead and keep momentum in UNH's favor.
- Sventy capped the scoring off Holmes' pass at 1:09.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH finished with the edge in shots (34-22), shots on goal (19-15), ground balls (19-16), draw controls (14-10) and turnovers (10-12).
- The Wildcats were a perfect 17-for-17 on clear attempts in comparison to Columbia's 14 of 20.
- UNH scored on 2 of 4 free-position shots and the Lions were 1-for-3.
- Neither team scored a woman-up goal; Columbia had two chances, whereas UNH did not have one.
- The game scoring consisted of four runs: Columbia (3-0), UNH (3-0), Columbia (5-0) and UNH (10-0).
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Taranto recorded 5+ points for the third consecutive game. She leads the team in both goals (28) and points (31).
- Taranto recorded a game-high 12 shots and was 2-for-2 on free-position shots.
- She previously tallied six points this season with a six-goal effort at Dartmouth.
- Emma Alpaugh (Darien, Conn.) recorded a career-high seven ground balls as well as four draw controls.
- In addition to a goal, MacEachern tallied a game-high seven draw controls and two ground balls.
- Payton Maddaloni (Mattituck, N.Y.) and Emma Magazu (Newtown, Conn.) both finished with three ground balls and one caused turnover.
- The three ground balls are a personal best for Maddaloni.
- Connerty extended her point streak to 11 games. She is the only Wildcat who has recorded a point all eight games this season.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has a 4-0 lifetime record against Columbia.
- New Hampshire won 15-12 last year at Wildcat Stadium.
- Prior to that, these programs had not met wince the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
