MacEachern Scores Three Goals in 19-8 Loss at Army West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) scored three goals but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was defeated 19-8 by Army West Point in Saturday afternoon's season opener for both teams at Michie Stadium.
In addition to three points, MacEachern led the Wildcats in both draw controls (five) and ground balls (four). Sophomore Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) also tallied three points with a goal and two assists. Senior captain Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.) scored two goals.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) made nine saves and allowed 19 goals in 54:57. Senior Danielle Martineau (Gilford, N.H.) did not face a shot on goal while playing the final 5:03 of the game.
Army was led offensively by Kathleen Sullivan (three goals, three assists), Julia Gorajek (3g, 1a) and Allison Reilly (1g, 3a). Starting goalie Lacey Bartholomay was credited with four saves and allowed two goals. Sherry Feng entered the game at the start of the third quarter and made three saves while allowing six goals. Lindsey Serafine played the final 1:50.

- UNH returns to action Saturday, Feb. 18 (1 p.m.) at Dartmouth College. The Wildcats' home opener is Wednesday, Feb. 22 (2 p.m.) vs. Merrimack College.
FIRST QUARTER
- The Black Knights ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 7-1 lead through 15 minutes.
- Julia Franzoni opened the game scoring at 13:28.
- On their first offensive possession of the 2023 season, Dunn scored on a high shot from the left doorstep with the shot clock winding down to tie the score, 1-1, at 12:23.
- Army scored five goals in a two-minute span to quickly build a 6-1 advantage. Sullivan ignited the run at 7:42 and a player-up goal by Madeline Lenkart at 6:25 gave the home team a 6-1 lead.
- Brigid Duffy struck at 1:16 to extend the advantage to 7-1.
SECOND QUARTER
- With UNH trailing 8-1, MacEachern converted a free position from the top of the fan into a goal to trim the deficit to six goals at 9:40.
- The Black Knights closed the half with four consecutive goals to push the margin to 13-2 at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- Connerty netted an unassisted goal at 8:27 of the third quarter to advance the score to 14-3.
- Army outscored the 'Cats 3-0 the rest of the quarter to extend the advantage to 17-3.
FOURTH QUARTER
- The Black Knights took a 19-3 lead at 11:28 before New Hampshire closed the game on a 5-0 run.
- Connerty set up MacEachern's second goal of the game at 10:20 and then also assisted on the next goal by sophomore Grace Curran (North Salem, N.Y.) at 8:45.
- Dunn struck again at 7:10 and then sophomore defender Emma Magazu (Newtown, Conn.) recorded her first career goal and point at 4:03.
- MacEachern scored her third goal and closed the game scoring at 1:50.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Army finished the game with a 38-18 shot advantage as well as a 20-10 edge in draw controls.
- UNH corralled 13 ground balls in comparison to the Black Knights' six.
- Both teams committed 10 turnovers. UNH was 10 of 11 on clear attempts while Army went 10-for-12.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- MacEachern recorded her 50th career point with the second of her three goals. She now has 40 goals and 11 assists for 51 points. MacEachern is UNH's active leader in both goals and points.
- Connerty now has 25 career assists, which leads all current 'Cats.
- Curran, a first-year Wildcat after transferring from Rutgers University, scored her first goal as a 'Cat.
- In addition to her first career goal, Magazu tallied three ground balls, a caused turnover and one draw control.
- Grad student Emma Alpaugh (Darien, Conn.) also made her UNH debut following her years at Trinity College. She was credited with two caused turnovers, one ground ball and a draw control.
- Freshman Rose Pavuk (York, Maine) made her collegiate debut off the bench.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- This was the first matchup between the UNH and Army West Point women's lacrosse programs.
