Taranto Scores Career-High Six Goals in 13-12 Loss at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – Senior attack Katie Taranto (Brewster, N.Y.) scored a career-high six goals but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was edged 13-12 by Dartmouth College at Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday afternoon.
Taranto scored once in the first quarter, three times in the third quarter and twice more in the fourth to finish with a career high of six points; she was also credited with two ground balls.
Sophomore Allie Connerty (Norwell, Mass.) tallied a goal and four assists to match her personal bests in both assists and points. Sophomore Grace Curran (North Salem, N.Y.; three goals) and freshman Rose Pavuk (York, Maine; two goals) were the other Wildcats to record multiple points.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maria Hagan (Downers Grove, Ill.) was credited with eight saves as well as a team- and career-high three ground balls.
Dartmouth was led offensively by Samantha Bennett (three goals, assist), Boo Dewitt (two goals, two assists) and Katina Christensen (three goals). Gisele Todd made 10 saves.
UNH moves to 0-2 on the season and Dartmouth is 1-0.

FIRST QUARTER
- Dartmouth built a 3-0 lead with goals at 11:48, 5:16 and 4:28.
- Taranto's sidearm shot from the middle of the fan lifted UNH within 3-1 at 1:20.
- Pavuk finished a pass to the top of the circle from Izzy Holmes (Seattle, Wash.) for a goal to trim the deficit to 3-2 with 47 seconds on the clock.
SECOND QUARTER
- UNH carried momentum into the second quarter to take its first lead of the game, 4-3.
- Connerty corralled a pass from Ava Schroeder (Niskayuna, N.Y.) deep on the right wing, charged toward the near post and scored from close range to tie the score, 3-3, at 12:39.
- Curran curled from behind the net to the right post and one-timed Connerty's feed into the cage to give the 'Cats a 4-3 lead at 10:24.
- DC responded with back-to-back goals at 6:42 and 5:26 to regain the lead, 5-4.
- Connerty found Pavuk cutting down the middle of the fan and she beat Gisele, who was charging out from the goalie crease, to level the score at 5 with 3:08 remaining in the first half.
THIRD QUARTER
- On a left-wing free position, Taranto fired a low shot into the goal to put the Wildcats back on top, 6-5, at 13:54.
- DC scored three goals in less than three minutes – at 12:02, 10:52 and 9:20 – to surge back in front, 8-6.
- Taranto and Curran scored on free positions at 7:42 and 6:33, respectively, to forge the fifth tie of the game, 8-8.
- Bennett put the home team back in the lead, 9-8, less than a minute later at 5:35.
- Taranto netted her fourth goal of the game when she rushed down the right side of the fan and deposited a shot in the bottom-left corner at 2:13. Mackenzie MacEachern (Bedford, N.H.) was credited with the assist.
FOURTH QUARTER
- The Wildcats took their third lead of the game, 10-9, at 13:09. From behind the net, Connerty found Taranto cutting to the front and she scored her fifth goal.
- Dartmouth tied the score, 10-10, on Boo Dewitt's goal 29 seconds later at 12:40.
- Curran's sidearm from the middle of the fan gave UNH an 11-10 lead at 7:21. Connerty, with the centering pass, was credited with an assist.
- The Big Green's third 3-0 run of the game put the home team back in front, 13-11, at 3:03.
- On a free position from the top of the 8-meter, Taranto scored on a low shot to lift the 'Cats within one goal, 13-12, with 59 seconds remaining.
- Dartmouth's Margaret Maruczewski won the ensuing draw control, however, and the Big Green maintained possession the rest of the way to secure the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- Dartmouth finished with the edge in shots (32-31), draw controls (18-11) and turnovers (10-13).
- UNH had a 15-10 advantage in ground balls.
- The Wildcats were 15 of 17 on clear attempts while DC was 16-for-18.
- New Hampshire scored on 4 of 11 free-position shots and the Big Green was 2-for-4.

- Taranto entered Saturday's game with a total of four career goals.
- Curran has recorded a point each of her first two games as a Wildcat; she has a total of four goals.
