Five Wildcats on NHL Opening Night Rosters

DURHAM, N.H. – Five former University of New Hampshire men's hockey players have earned spots on NHL Opening Night rosters: forward James van Riemsdyk (Boston Bruins), forward Trevor van Riemsdyk (Washington Capitals), defenseman Brett Pesce (Carolina Hurricanes), goalie Casey DeSmith (Vancouver Canucks) and forward Warren Foegele (Edmonton Oilers).
James van Riemsdyk (2007-09) will make his debut for the Bruins tonight versus the Chicago Blackhawks at 7:30 p.m. on TNT. This season will be his first with the Bruins and the 15th of his NHL career after playing his first three seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, followed by six seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, then returning with the Flyers for the last five seasons. van Riemsdyk has 300 goals and 291 assists for 591 points during his career. He has played in 71 playoff games with a total of 20 goals and 11 assists for 33 points.
Trevor van Riemsdyk (2011-14) is going into his 10th season in the NHL, fourth with the Washington Capitals. The Capitals play their first game on Friday versus the Pittsburgh Penguins on ESPN+ at 7:30 p.m. Throughout his career he has scored 24 goals and has 88 assists in the regular season for 112 points. During his playoff career has played in 32 games with two goals and two assists. van Riemsdyk has also played for the Chicago Blackhawks from 2014 to 2017 and the Carolina Hurricanes from 2017 to 2020. He won the Stanley Cup with Chicago in 2015.
Pesce (2012-2015) will start his ninth season with the Carolina Hurricanes tonight versus the Ottawa Senators at 7 p.m. on ESPN+. Last season, Pesce and his team made it to the Eastern Conference Finals. During the 2022-23 regular season Pesce had five goals and 25 assists, and in the playoffs he had two goals and four assists. For his career, Pesce has scored 36 goals and posted 149 assists for 185 points. Pesce has played in 55 playoff games with a total of five goals and 15 assists.
DeSmith (2011-14) enters his first season with the Vancouver Canucks after playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins for the last five seasons. The Canucks open the year versus the Edmonton Oilers tonight at 10 p.m. on ESPN+. DeSmith has played in 134 NHL games with 115 starts. DeSmith has made 3,870 saves with a save percentage of .912 and a goal against average of 2.81.
Foegele (2014-15) starts his third season with the Oilers after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Carolina Hurricanes. Foegele and the Oilers made it to the second round of the playoffs last year. Foegele appeared in 12 of those games, scoring two goals and one assist. During the regular season, Foegele had 13 goals and 15 assists. During his regular season career, he has 60 goals and 62 assists for 122 points, while playing in a total of 58 playoff games he has scored nine goals with seven assists for 16 points.
UNH currently has six NHL Draft picks on the 2023-24 roster: freshman forward Ryan Conmy (LA Kings-182nd overall pick in 2023), sophomore goalie Tyler Muszelik (Florida Panthers-189th overall pick in 2022), sophomore Stiven Sardarian (Buffalo Sabres-88th overall pick in 2021), junior captain Alex Gagne (Tampa Bay Lightning-192nd overall pick in 2021), senior Luke Reid (Nashville Predators-166th overall pick in 2020) and senior alternate captain Harrison Blaisdell (Winnipeg Jets-134th overall pick in 2019).
