Neyland Records Five Points in 13-12 OT Loss at UAlbany

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior Julia Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.) scored four goals, including the last two of regulation, but the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was edged 13-12 in overtime by the University at Albany in Saturday afternoon's America East conference game at John Fallon Field.
Neyland, who scored the game-tying goal with 2:23 remaining in regulation to tie the score at 12, also had an assist to match her career high of five points. Grad student Rylee Leonard (Coventry, R.I.) tied her personal best of three assists and scored a goal to finish with four points.
Senior Sabrina Grovom (San Marcos, Calif.) scored two goals for the third consecutive game and sophomore Liv Dunn (Newbury, Mass.) also scored twice. Junior goalie Issy Torres (Elmhurst, Ill.) was credited with six saves.
Bryar Hogg scored three goals for UAlbany and that included the overtime tally 2:33 into the extra session. Sarah Falk led all players with five goals. Aislinn Sweeney made three saves.
UNH is 1-2 overall and 0-1 in America East. The Great Danes are 3-2, 1-0.

FIRST HALF
- Dunn's first goal gave New Hampshire a 1-0 lead 2:21 into the game.
- UAlbany responded with goals 44 seconds apart by Katie Pascale and Falk to take a 2-1 leaad at 26:17.
- Delaney Pratt (Lafayette, Colo.) finished Leonard's feed to tie the score, 2-2, at 23:38.
- The Great Danes rattled off five consecutive goals to build a 7-2 advantage at 13:33.
- UNH answered with a 3-1 spurt on goals by Neyland at 12:26, Grovom at 10:59 and Nelyand again at 3:04 to close within 8-5.
- Falk's third goal of the half gave the home team a 9-5 lead at 1:38.
- UAlbany won the ensuing draw control, but Leonard caused a turnover and got the ground ball in the waning seconds to keep the margin at four goals heading into halftime.
SECOND HALF
- Dunn once again scored the first goal of the half – this time off Neyland's pass – and Leonard scored 18 seconds later to lift the Wildcats within 9-7 at 28:50.
- Leonard then set up Grovom's second goal of the game to close the gap to 9-8 at 23:59.
- UNH had four possessions with an attempt to pull even and generated five shots in that span -- two wide, one high, one blocked and one saved by Sweeney – but the Great Danes held on to that one goal lead with 15:45 on the clock.
- UAlbany responded with back-to-back goals at 14:44 and 13:15 to take an 11-8 lead at 13:15.
- An extended UNH possession led to a goal by sophomore Ava Schroeder (Niskayuna, N.Y.) at 11:30.
- Freshman Olivia O'Connor (Hopkinton, Mass.) gained control of the next draw and that generated a free-position goal by senior Elizabeth Blanding (Pittsford, N.Y.) at 10:37 to once again lift the 'Cats within one goal, 11-10.
- Hogg gave UAlbany a 12-10 advantage at 8:10.
- Neyland converted Leonard's pass into a goal and 12-11 score at 3:28. She won the ensuing draw control and scored again to forge the third tie of the game – first since 2-2 – at 2:23.
- New Hampshire got the ball with 65 seconds remaining on a caused turnover by Neyland and ground ball by Blanding.
- Neyland's shot was stopped by Sweeney with 15 seconds left. Dunn picked up the ground ball and fired a shot wide of the cage.
OVERTIME
- Neyland's third draw control of the game gave UNH first possession in the sudden-victory extra session.
- Dunn's shot went wide of the cage 56 seconds into OT but the 'Cats retained possession. The Wildcats were awarded a free position 1:43 into overtime but did not shoot, then turned the ball over 10 seconds later.
- UAlbany cleared the ball into its attack zone and Hogg finished a feed from Katie Pascale for the game-winning goal 2:23 into OT.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH recorded an 18-11 shot advantage in the second half to outscored the hosts 7-3 and force overtime.
- Both teams recorded one shot in the extra session. UAlbany finished with the 31-29 edge that included 19-15 on goal.
- Ground balls were even at 19.
- UAlbany had a 16-11 edge in draw controls.
- Turnovers were relatively even. UNH finished with 15 in comparison to the Great Danes' 17.
- Both teams excelled on clear attempts. UNH was 16 of 17 while UAlbany went 15-for-17.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Grovom has scored two goals all three games this season for a total of six. She scored four goals her first three years as a Wildcat.
- Grovom and Leonard are the two Wildcats who have recorded a point every game this season.
- Neyland recorded 11 of the team's 29 shots with six on goal.
- Junior Abby Cranney (Amherst, N.H.) led all Wildcats and tied for the game high with four ground balls.
- Neyland, O'Connor and Delaney Pratt (Lafayette, Colo.) each recorded three draw controls.
- Neyland also had a team-high three caused turnovers.
- Senior Gabby Masseur (Nashua, N.H.) made her season debut and tallied an assist (on Schroeder's goal).
- The goal was Blanding's first -- and first point -- of the season.
- Neyland has a team-high 10 points this season. Her seven goals are tied with Dunn for the team lead.
- Leonard has a team-high six assists and is tied with Dunn for second in points with eight.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has an 11-15 lifetime record against UAlbany, which was won 14 straight in the series.
- Each of the last three meetings in Albany has been decided by one goal. The Great Danes prevailed 12-11 in April 2019 and 9-8 in the 2017 season.
