Myers Scores Twice in 5-4 Loss at #10 Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Avery Myers (Fargo, N.D.) scored a career-high two goals but the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team was edged 5-4 by 10th-ranked Providence College at Schneider Arena on Saturday night.
UNH redshirt junior goaltender Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) was credited with 31 saves. The Wildcats' other goal scorers were sophomore Jada Christian (Caledon East, Ontario) and junior Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario).
PC goalie Sandra Abstreiter stopped 24 shots. Lindsay Bochna (two goals), Brooke Becker (goal, assist) Bailey Burton (two assists) and Claire Tyo (two assists) recorded two points apiece.
UNH moves to 6-11-1 both overall and in Hockey East. PC earned a split of the home-and-home series to improve to 10-5-1 overall and in the league.
FIRST PERIOD
· Both teams netted two goals in the opening stanza as PC recorded a 15-6 shot advantage.
· Providence took an early 1-0 lead on Becker's goal 1:40 after the opening faceoff.
· Christian netted an unassisted power-play goal at 10:11 to tie the score when she skated off the left half-boards to the top of the crease and jammed the puck into the net.
· The Friars regained the lead just 19 seconds later, however, on Isabelle Hardy's goal at 10:30.
· Myers once again leveled the score, 2-2, at 17:40 when she corralled a rebound in the slot and wristed a shot into the upper-right corner. Senior Julia Scammell (Truro, Nova Scotia), with the initial shot from the high slot, and Ciara Wall (Hampton, N.H.) were credited with assists.
SECOND PERIOD
· UNH netted the only goal of the middle stanza despite Providence's 12-10 shot advantage.
· Myers netted her second goal of the game and third of the season to give the Wildcats their only lead of the game, 3-2, at 13:59. Cutting down the right circle, she collected a cross-ice pass from freshman Charli Kettyle (Perth, Ontario) and snapped a low shot inside the left post. Lindsey Dumond (Hampton, N.H.) earned the secondary assist.
THIRD PERIOD
· New Hampshire recorded a 12-9 shot advantage in the final frame, but it was Providence with the 3-1 edge in goals to rally for the win.
· Hayley Lunny and Bochna scored goals less than three minutes apart (at 2:07 and 5:03, respectively) to transform the Friars' one-goal deficit into a 4-3 lead.
· Bochna extended the advantage to 5-3 at 14:13. She won a battle for the loose puck at the right doorstep and batted it across the crease, continued after the puck and tucked it inside the left post.
· Boutilier went to the bench in favor of an extra skater at 16:38.
· Martin scored an extra-attacker goal to lift the Wildcats within 5-4 at 17:44 when she shoveled a rebound into the open left side of the cage from the top of the crease. Senior Maddie Truax (Gardner, Mass.), with the initial shot from the high slot, set up the tally.
· Boutilier reentered the game, but returned to the bench for an extra attacker with 49 seconds remaining.
· UNH was whistled for a penalty with 13 seconds left and that forced Boutilier back in net.
· PC did not allow a shot the rest of the way to secure the win.
UNH NOTEBOOK
· UNH's shutout streak ended at 186 minutes, 47 seconds. The Wildcats had recorded three consecutive shutouts since UConn's third-period goal on Jan. 16.
· Boutilier's shutout streak ended at 183:44.
· UNH has a 2-3-1 record against nationally-ranked teams.
· Christian has a team-high six goals.
· Martin climbed into a tie for the team lead in points with 11; she now ranks second in goals with five.
· In addition to scoring a goal, Martin won 16 of 27 faceoffs.
· Myers matched her best of two points established Dec. 23, 2020 vs. Holy Cross; she tallied a goal and an assist in that game.
· Dumond recorded a team-high three blocks.
· Boutilier increased her career saves total to 2,230, which ranks second in program history. Jen Huggon holds the benchmark of 2,851.
· Boutilier is No. 4 in career minutes at 4864:22; third on the list is Alicia Roberts at 6526:33.
· UNH's penalty kill has been perfect each of the past six games in 19 shorthanded situations and has successfully killed off 21 consecutive opponent power plays dating back to Jan. 9.
· PC was 0-for-1 Saturday night and the Wildcats converted one of two power-play opportunities.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
· UNH has an 85-61-15 edge in the all-time series vs. Providence.
· The Wildcats had won each of the previous three meetings, the last two by shutout.
