Truter Scores Goal in 6-1 Loss to #3 Northeastern

DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman forward Chavonne Truter (Uxbridge, Ontario) scored a third-period goal to lift the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team within 3-1, but third-ranked Northeastern University netted three late goals to pull away for a 6-1 win Saturday afternoon at the Whittemore Center.
Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) recorded 34 saves, including 16 in the first period and 11 more in the second. She allowed four goals, as NU scored twice into an empty net.
Northeastern's Chloe Aurard and Megan Carter both scored two goals to lead the Huskies to their 10th consecutive win. Alina Mueller (one goal, one assist) and Maureen Murphy (two assists) als recorded multiple points. NU goalie Aerin Frankel was credited with 23 saves and an assist.
UNH is now 6-12-1, including 2-4-1 against nationally-ranked teams. NU is 14-1-1, including 2-0-1 against the Wildcats. The teams face off again Feb. 14 at Matthews Arena. Game time on NESN is 5 p.m.

FIRST PERIOD
- Northeastern came out strong in the opening stanza and quickly tallied a goal at 2:38 on a one-timer from Mueller, who was assisted by Murphy and Brooke Hobson.
- The Huskies struck again at 12:71 on Aurard's blistering wrist shot in the upper-right corner of the goal. Mueller and Skylar Fontaine were credited with assists.
- One bright spot for UNH in the first period was its penalty kill, as the
Wildcats kept the Huskies scoreless on two power plays. - Part of that stellar PK was Boutilier, who made six of her 18 first-period saves with the 'Cats shorthanded.
- The Huskies controlled the pace of the first period as they doubled the Wildcats in shots, 18-9, and dominated faceoffs (10-3).
SECOND PERIOD
- Penalties plagued both teams in the second period with a total of five penalties for 10 penalty minutes; UNH was whistled for three penalties and Northeastern had two.
- The Huskies converted their fourth power play of the game into Carter's goal at 6:18. Frankel passed the puck to Carter, who showcased her athleticism on a coast-to-coast goal that gave the visitors a 3-0 lead. She skated from the right wing, deked her way into the middle and scored on a backhand shot to the upper right side to beat Boutilier gloveside.
- UNH did not convert either of its power plays and remained scoreless in the second. The 'Cats did have greater success in the faceoff circle with 10 wins in 18 draws.
- The Huskies once again doubled up the Wildcats in shots, 12-6.
THIRD PERIOD
- The Wildcats came out with energy in the third period and it produced their first goal of the game from Truter at 5:46 to close within 3-1. Frankel was unable to control the rebound off the initial shot by Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario) from the left doorstep and Truter wristed the puck in the top right corner. Brianna Brooks (Whitby, Ontario) was credited with the secondary assist.
- UNH pulled Boutilier in favor of an extra skater twice late in the game, but Northeastern scored empty-net goals 39 seconds apart by Katy Knoll at 17:22 and Carter at 18:01 to extend the lead to 5-1.
- Aurard redirected Lauren MacInnis' shot from the right point into the goal just 24 seconds later to make it 6-1 at 18:25.
- NU generated an 11-9 shots advantage in the final frame and once again had a 10-3 edge in the faceoff circle.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Truter scored her fourth goal of the season. Her goal ended NU's shutout streak at 185 minutes, 53 seconds.
- Kelly now leads the team in both assists (nine) and points (12).
- Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec) led the team with five shots.
- Maddie Truax (Gardner, Mass.) recorded a team-high three blocks.
- NU's second-period power-play goal ended UNH's streak at 24 consecutive successful penalty kills.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH and Northeastern have met 148 times with UNH holding a 79-59-10 advantage.
- NU is unbeaten the past 12 meetings (11-0-1).
