'Cats Shut Out Black Bears, 3-0

Noemi Martinez earned a shutout while three ‘Cats scored in the win.
ORONO, Maine — The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey skated past the University of Maine (11-18-4, 7-12-4 HEA) on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 14) at Alfond Arena, shutting the Black Bears out 3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Neither team broke through offensively in the opening 20 minutes, leaving the 0-0 score intact. Following the first, Maine holds the edge on the shot chart with nine tries on net compared to seven from the Wildcats.
-Both defenses held on in the second frame, keeping the game knotted at 0-0. Through the period, New Hampshire outpaced the Black Bears on offense, leading the shot chart 17-to-9 and taking a 24-to-18 edge overall.
-The Wildcats broke open the scoring 4:32 into the third period, when Callista Printz (Buffalo, N.Y.) fired home for her first goal of the season.
-New Hampshire doubled the lead just under eight minutes later while shorthanded when Nina Rossi (Pittsgrove, N.J.) picked up a turnover in the neutral zone, skating in on the Maine net and beating Kiia Lahntinen with a deke in front before flipping the puck in off the backhand.
-Addison Spitz (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) iced the game for the 'Cats with 2:52 to play on an empty-netter, bringing about the final 3-0 tally.

-Five different players earned a point in the win, headlined by the game-winning goal from Callista Printz early in the third period.
-With Nina Rossi's shorthanded goal midway through the third, the Wildcats earned their sixth score of the year while down a player, ranking third-most across the NCAA this season.
-Additionally, Rossi's third period score extended her point streak to five games (1g, 5a).
-15 different Wildcats landed a shot on net in the win, paced by six tries from Nina Rossi. Of the 15 shooters, seven different 'Cats landed 3+ shots on goal.
-On special teams, both the Wildcats and Black Bears went zero-for-three on the power-play.
-On defense, 11 different players landed a block, paced by Sadie Makokis (St. Albert, Alberta) with four blocks. Additionally, nine players stood in the way of multiple shots, including five players who had 3+ blocks.
-In net, Noemi Martinez (Glen Ridge, N.J.) denied all 31 shots faced for her third-career shutout and second of the season.
