Blanding's Career-High Four Points Propels 'Cats Past Binghamton, 12-10

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team edged Binghamton University in a back-and-forth battle on Saturday. Elizabeth Blanding (Pittsford, N.Y.) recorded a career-high four points to lead the Wildcats to the 12-10 victory at Wildcat Stadium.
Wildcats' goalie Issy Torres (Elmhurst, Ill.) recorded nine saves on the day with six of them coming in the second half. Three other Wildcats – Rylee Leonard (Conventry, R.I.), Teagan Northrup (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Catherine Sexton (Niskayuna, N.Y.) – had multiple point games. Leonard tallied two goals and one assist, Northrup netted two goals and Miller recorded one of each.
Caroline Hernon (Hampton, N.H.) had a team- and career-high ground balls with seven and also grabbed four draw controls. Hernon added a goal and caused a turnover.
Binghamton was led offensively by Amelia Biancardi (3g) and Olivia Batista (2g, 1a). Taylor Passuello stopped 11 shots.
In a game that saw eight ties and four lead changes, UNH prevailed to improve to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in America East while Binghamton is 0-9, 0-1.

FIRST HALF
- UNH got on the board first at 29:16 on a goal from Leonard on a free-position shot.
- Binghamton struck back at 23:09 on a goal from Batista to tie the game.
- UNH went back-to-back at 21:40 on a goal from Julia Neyland (Boxborough, Mass.) and 20:22 on a goal from Blanding to take a 3-1 lead.
- The Bearcats answered at 15:11 on a free-position goal from Alissa Franze and then again at 13:36 on a goal from Biancardi on a great pass from behind cage to the crease for the finish to tie the game at 3-3.
- Less than two minutes later – at 11:40 – UNH scored on a goal by Devan Miller (Bristol, R.I.). Miller made a great move across the crease to give the Wildcats a 4-3 lead.
- Two goals by Binghamton in a two-minute span gave them a 5-4 lead with 7:45 left in the first half.
- UNH struck back a minute later on a goal from Leonard, whose shot from the left side painted the top left corner for the goal to tie the game 5-5 at 6:36.
- After a great save from UNH's Torres to keep the game tied, the Wildcats scored at 3:28 on Blanding's second goal of the game, as she scooped up a loose ball in front of the cage before finishing to give UNH a 6-5 advantage.
- Binghamton tied it up, 6-6, with 30.6 seconds on the clock with a goal from Alyssa Sanchez on a free position shot.
- UNH scored with five seconds remaining in the half on a goal from Blanding (3rd of game) to regain the lead, 7-6, going into the locker room.
SECOND HALF
- UNH opened the scoring in the second half at 26:03 on a goal from Mickenzie Larivee (Amherst, N.H.). She came from behind the cage and made a nice spin move to the inside on the crease to finish and give UNH a two-goal advantage, 8-6.
- The Bearcats rattled off the next three goals within two minutes to take a 9-8 lead on tallies by Batista, Emily Masera and Biancardi.
- UNH responded at 18:44 on a goal from Sexton on a fantastic around the back shot in front of the cage and then again at 16:36 on a goal by Northrup to regain the lead, 10-9.
- Binghamton tied it up at 10 at 14:25 on a free-position goal by Rebecca Golderman.
- UNH closed out the game with a goal at 12:58 from Northrup and then again at 8:33 on a goal from Hernon to take the lead and the win, 12-10.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- This is UNH's best start through nine games since the 2010 squad was also 6-3.
- Sexton finished with a goal and assist to keep her nine-game goal streak alive.
- Miller extended her point streak to nine games with a goal in the first half.
- Leonard has now scored in eight consecutive games.
- Northrup's goal streak was extended to five games and point streak to eight.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UNH improved to 2-1 at home in 2019.
- The Wildcats led the ground ball battle, 20-8, and had a slight edge in both shots (31-28) and turnovers (11-13).
- UNH had a successful day on clear attempts, going 12-13, and the draw controls were 12-12.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH now has a 17-1 lifetime record against Binghamton and that includes a perfect 10-0 in Durham.
