DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team heads into its second weekend of conference play, defending an undefeated 2-0-0 Hockey East record against the Vermont Catamounts and the #3 Northeastern Huskies on the road.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Wildcats opened up Hockey East play with a 2-0-0 record for the first time since 2010-2011. They defeated the UConn Huskies on Friday evening, 2-0, and #10 Boston University on Saturday, 4-2.
- New Hampshire traveled to UConn Friday evening and faced off in a scrappy game that resulted in 15 total penalties. After a scoreless first, junior Ellie Sasaki (Markahm, Ontario) notched the game-winning tally before freshman Jada Christian (Caledon East, Ontario) scored her first career goal on a power play to add insurance in the third. Redshirt sophomore Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) stopped all 23 UConn shots on goal for her second shutout of the season.
- The 'Cats returned home the following afternoon to take on #10 BU. After falling behind early in the first, UNH rallied back with a goal from senior Meghara McManus (Milton, Mass.), tying the game 1-1 going into the first intermission. The 'Cats took the lead on a goal from sophomore Emily Rickwood (Branftord, Ontario) and never looked back, with sophomore Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario) tallying the eventual game-winner and Carlee Turner (Scottsdale, Ariz.) adding the fourth goal midway through the third period.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
- Seniors Carlee Turner and Meghara McManus lead the team with six points each, both on three goals and three assists. Both are a +3 and +2, respectively, on the season.
- Sophomore defender Emily Rickwood has also tallied a team-high three goals on the season, scoring her first three career goals in the last four games.Rickwood also has two assists for five points on the year.
- Two other Wildcats have also tallied five points on the season: Redshirt senior Taylor Wenczkowski (Rochester, N.H.) has one game-winning goal and four assists on the year, and freshman Tamara Thiérus (Saint-Jérôme, Quebec) has five assists in five games, with two multi-point games in her debut season.
- Redshirt sophomore Paige Rynne (Ancaster, Ontario) has also tallied a team-high three goals on the season with one assits for four points; she's a +4 on the season.
'CATS IN THE POLLS
For the first time since November 20, 2017, the Wildcats are receiving national attention from USCHO and USA Hockey. After defeating #10 BU, the Wildcats are receiving one vote in the USCHO.com poll, and two votes in the USA Hockey poll.
SCOUTING VERMONT
- The Catamounts (Burlington, Vt.) come into the weekend with an undefeated record of 2-0-2. This will be their first conference matchup of the season.
- Vermont split their first two series' of the season, winning and tying against both RIT and St. Lawrence.
- Vermont took the season series in 2018-19, with two wins and a tie against UNH.
- New Hampshire's last win over Vermont came in the 2017-18 season, splitting the home series on November 3 and 4 with a 2-2 tie in game one and a 6-2 victory in game two.
SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN
- The Huskies (Boston, Mass.) come into the weekend ranked #3 in the nation in both polls.
- NU and UNH with face off Sunday after facing Hockey East opponents on Friday evening; Northeastern travels to Maine for a 6 P.M. puck drop Friday evening.
- Northeastern came into the weekend with three straight wins over Union and Syracuse.
- The Huskies hold a six-game winning streak over New Hampshire including two playoff meetings. The Wildcats last defeated the Huskies in December of 2017 with a big 2-1 overtime victory at the Whittemore Center.
- This will be the second weekend in a row UNH plays a team with a husky mascot.
