Shanahan, Throwers Dominate in Home Opener

DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire track and field teams hosted their annual season opening meet at the Reggie Atkins Track & Field Facility in Wildcat Stadium and in the surrounding areas.
The teams placed in the top two, with the men's team winning by over 30 points with a final team score of 211, followed by Maine at 168. The women's team was just edged out by Maine, 166-165 in the team score.
The men's performance was highlighted once again by the throwers, who won every event for UNH. Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.) continued his impressive season with a win in the hammer throw, notching 212 feet, 5 inches, winning the vent by a full 35 feet. Shanahan was followed by four Wildcats as the top five in the hammer; Eric Brogioli (Milford, Mass.) took second with a throw of 177'06", setting a new personal best in the event. Following behind him was Edward Speidel (Dover, N.H.) who also set a new PB with a third place throw of 173'9". The hammer was rounded out by Jon Chapman (Newport, R.I.) in fourth and Cullen Aubin (Warwick, R.I.) in fifth. Chapman threw 168'1" and Aubin threw a new personal best 165'1"
The javelin was won by Kyle Faucher (Danville, N.H.) who hit a new personal best in the event with 166'4"; he was followed by Aidan Moore in fourth place, posting his first collegiate track and field result, a throw of 141'6".
A one-two-three finish in the shot put saw Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) finish first with a long throw of 55'2" , followed by Nicholas Ritzo (Rye, N.H.) in second with a throw of 48"5.25". Shanahan finished third with a throw of 48'4.75"
Finally, the discus throw was highlighted by Ritzo finishing first with a throw of 153'10". Shanahan set a new personal best in the discus, finishing third with 149'9", followed by Astle in fourth at 149', and Duncan Holland (Nashua, N.H.) took fifth with a throw of 134'2", another new personal best.
Other Wildcat highlights for the men's team included Alex Tamulonis (Mason, N.H.) taking first in the pole vault, reaching 14'11.5" and a first place finish for Brett Hoerner (Manchester, N.H.) in the 1500, finishing in 4 minutes, 4.07 seconds.

The 'Cats are back in action next week for the Providence Invitational on Friday, April 13. UNH will be back in Durham next Saturday for a tri meet with Merrimack and UMass Lowell on Saturday, April 14 starting at 11 A.M.

- Nicolas Ochoa-Sevilla (Chester, N.H.) took first in the 3000 meter steeple chase with a time of 9:46.36. He was followed by Aidan Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) in second at 9:55.76 and Dylan McLaughlin (Moultonborough, N.H.) in third at 10:20.80.
- The 110 meter hurdles saw a one-two finish from Andrew Matteucci (Andover, Mass.) and Christopher Gansfuss (Flemington, N.J.). Matteaucci finished in 15.66 seconds, Gansfuss in 15.89.
- The Wildcats owned the 5000 meter run, with Dean Yost (Canton, Conn.) taking first in 15:29.35, Davis Clark (Manchester, N.H.) taking second in 15:34.88, James Wilkes (Concord, N.H.) finishing third in 15:36.07 and Ryan Spelman (Franklin, Mass.) finishing fourth in 15;36.61.
- In the triple jump, Jordan Buckmire and Ryan Dutille finished second and fifth respectively. Buckmire notched a finish of 44'6.25" and Dutille posted a distance of 39'6".
- Joseph Hook (Rockaway, N.J.) finished as the runner-up in the 400 meter dash with a finsh of 51.21 seconds. Christian Ehlers (Kingston, N.H.) took sixth in the event in 52.66 seconds.
- In the 100 meter dash, Brandon Allen (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) finished as the runner up in 10.92 seconds. DeUnte Chatman (Houston, Texas) took eighth in 11.57 seconds.
- Allen also took third in the 200 meter dash in 22.53 seconds.
- Samuel Lanternier (Derry, N.H.) and Alex Karam (Scarborough, Maine) took third and fifth respectively in the 800 meter run, Lanternier's time was 1:58.90, Karam's 1:59.32.
- In relays, the team of Chatman, Allen, Hoolk, and Jack Kennefick took third place in the 4x100, with a final finish time of 46.01 seconds.
- In the 4x400, Ehlers, Hoerner, Karam, and James Busi (Plastow, N.H.) took third in 3:30.86.
