Men’s Track and Field Places Third at New England Championships

Three Wildcats capture gold
RESULTS
AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Kevin Finn (Kennebunk, Maine), junior Yoofi Abaka-Amuah (Worcester, Mass.) and junior Liam McGovern (North Kingstown, R.I.) each won gold as the University of New Hampshire men's track and field team competed at the New England Outdoor Championships at the UMass Track & Field Complex on Saturday.
The Wildcats placed third out of 30 teams with 87 points. UMass won the team championship with 119.5 points.
Finn, who had won four relay championships during his career, captured the 1,500 meter run in a personal record time of 3:49.73 to earn 10 points for the team and win his first career individual title. Graduate student Aidan Shea (Amherst, Mass.) took silver in a time of 3:52.29 to pick up eight points.
After winning the America East title in the shot put last week, Abaka-Amuah won gold in the shot put with a toss of 60'8.75". This was his first New England outdoor title and his third overall as he has two New England indoor shot put gold medals.
Last week, McGovern defended his America East title in the hammer throw and this week he defended his New England championship with a distance of 198'5". Junior Caden Zalenski (Milford, N.H.) placed second to secure eight points with a throw of 193'9", while junior Jack Washam (Nashua, N.H.) was fourth at 182'11" to record five points.
Junior John Murphy (Deerfield, N.H.) took silver in the 5,000 meter run to post eight points with a time of 14:34.68.
The 4x800 meter relay team of Shea, Finn, sophomore Julian Rime (New City, N.Y.) and senior Brayden Kearns (Deerfield, N.H.) recorded a second-place finish in a time of 7:45.09 to add eight points to the team total.
Freshman Alain Twite (Concord, N.H.) earned bronze in the triple-jump at a career-best distance of 47'6.5" for six points.
Freshman Gavin Malark (Stratham, N.H.) placed fourth in the 10,000 meter run to earn five points with a time of 31:54.24.
Junior Max LaPointe (Amesbury, Mass.) was fourth in the discus with a personal record throw of 166"5' for five points.
Rime totaled four points with his fifth-place finish in the 800 meter run in a time of 1:53.85.
Selected Wildcats will return to action at the First Round of the NCAA Championships from May 28-May 31 in Jacksonville, Fla. Athletes accepted into the first round will be announced on Thursday, May 22.
