PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of New Hampshire men's and women's track & field teams competed this past Friday at the Ocean State Invitational hosted by Providence College, competing against top talent from the NCAA and the pros.
The lone male athlete, William Ulrich (Mineola, N.Y.) competed in the very competitive mile run with runners who were expected to break the four-minute mark; Ulrich finished strong in ninth, with a finishing time of 4 minutes, 10.51 seconds, his best finish in the outdoor mile and just three seconds off his personal best in the mile run, 4:07.54.
Five athletes from the women's team competed in the mile run and the 5000m run. In the 5000m, Kayla Farren (Nashua, N.H.) and Caroline Mahoney (Bedford, N.H.) finished one after the other in their heat, Farren finishing second in 17:51.05 and Mahoney in 17:51.64. Their times were enough to place them 11th and 12th in the finals. Both of their finishes were new personal bests in the vent, Farren beating her old time of 17:52.68 and Mahoney beating her old time of 17:52.59, both of which were set in the indoor season.
The remaining three women's athletes were in the mile. Hannah Kimball (Atkinson, N.H.) was the top finisher for the Wildcats in the event, winning her heat in 4:52.85. Her time was good enough for a ninth place overall finish. Angelyn Masters (Bangor, Maine) took 10th overall, ninth in her heat, with a finishing time of 4:53.15. Her finish just missed her personal best in the event by less than a second (4:52.64). Meg Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) took sixth in her heat and placed 18th overall with a time of 5:01.59. The finish is a new personal best in the event, beating her old time by 14 seconds (5:15.30).
