Pogue, 'Cats Improve to 26-4, Face Maine in Sunday Semifinal

PORTLAND, Maine – Junior center Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored 23 points and had six rebounds to lead the No. 1 University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to a 58-49 quarterfinal win over No. 8 Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon and into the America East Conference semifinals at the Cross Insurance Arena.
The Wildcats will play in the tournament semifinals for the first time since 2014 on Sunday at 2 p.m. against the University of Maine on ESPN3. The No. 4 Black Bears topped No. 5 Binghamton, 57-40, in Saturday's second quarterfinal game.
The UNH-Maine winner advances to the America East Championship game on Friday, March 10 at 4:30 p.m. on ESPNU. If the Wildcats beat Maine, they will host the title game in Lundholm Gymnasium on Friday. They have never played in the league's championship game.
UNH's Maureen Magarity was named America East Coach of the Year on Friday night and her team improved its program-best record to 26-4 on Saturday. The previous team record for wins was 23.
The Wildcats have won seven straight and 20 of their last 21 games.
Pogue was named the America East Player of the Year at the league's award banquet Friday. She made eight of her 12 field goal attempts and seven of her eight free throws against Stony Brook.
Junior guard Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) had 15 points and junior forward Kat Fogarty (Westminster, Mass.) had 13 points and blocked five shots.

HIGHLIGHTS
The Wildcats won their first outright America East regular season championship this year and now they're looking to advance past the semifinals for the first time and make their inaugural appearance in the tournament title game.
They'll have to get past a longtime border rival to do it.
The Black Bear knocked UNH out of the America East tournament last year in the quarterfinals, 58-47.
UNH won the regular season league title with a 15-1 record and swept the series with Maine.
The Wildcats beat Maine, 50-44, in Durham on Jan. 19 and 65-57 in Bangor on Feb. 15.
The Black Bears feature senior guard Sigi Koizar, who was named to the America East All Conference First Team, and freshman forward Laia Sole, who earned the league's Sixth Player of the Year Award.
Koizar had 16 points and four rebounds against Binghamton. Sole had six points and five rebounds. Blanca Millan had 14 points and Anita Kelava had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Fogarty, Lai and junior guard Olivia Healy (Reading, Mass.) joined Magarity and Pogue in picking up league honors on Friday night.
Pogue was named to the All Conference First team as well as being Player of the Year. Fogarty was named to the All Conference second team and Lai and Healy each made the All Conference Third Team.
Pogue was only the second Wildcat to receive Player of the Year honors and she's the first since Kris Kinney in 1988-89.
Magarity was the second UNH coach to collect Coach of the Year honors and first since Kathy Sanborn in 1993-94. Sanborn also was Coach of the Year in 1988-89.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Pogue had eight points to lead the Wildcats to a 12-11 edge after one period.
The game was tied 22-22 at the half and Pogue had 12 points at the break. The Wildcats missed their four three-point attempts in the first half and Stony Brook was one-for-six.
UNH owned a 40-38 lead after three periods. Pogue was up to 16 points and Fogarty 12 at that point.
The Wildcats led 49-45 with 2:10 left in the fourth quarter.
Lai drove for a basket to push the lead to 51-45 and the Wildcats made free throws down the stretch to pull away.
