Men’s Track Heads to Coaches Meet Against Domestic Violence (Feb. 6)

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire men's track & field team takes on 11 programs at the Coaches Meet Against Domestic Violence at the University of Rhode Island this Saturday (Feb. 6).
Last Time Out
The Wildcats placed first in their meet last weekend against the University of Maine, University of Vermont, and Bowdoin College. Junior Michael Shanahan (Dover, NH) broke his previous school record in weight throw with a toss of 68 feet, 9.25 inch toss. Junior Drew Piazza (Danvers, Ma), who ran at Boston University, also broke a school record, running the 800-meter race in 1 minute, 47.28 seconds.
Meet Details
The Coaches Meet Against Domestic Violence kicks off with the throwing events at 11 a.m. at the Mackal Field House. The running events will be starting at 12 p.m. With two meets until the America East Championships (Feb. 19-20), the team is in preparation mode.
Next Up
The UNH men's track team will be competing in the Davis Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 12 at the Track & Tennis Center at Boston University and will compete at Maine (Feb. 13) with Vermont competing as well.
America East Weekly Honors
Both Shanahan and Piazza secured America East weekly honors this past week. Shanahan was named Field Performer of the Week and Piazza was named Track Performer of the Week for a clean sweep of the men's weekly awards.
Senior Sprints
Seniors D'Mahl McFadden (Penacook, N.H.) and Isaiah Penn (Boston, Ma) will be sprinting in Rhode Island on Saturday. McFadden, who has raced in every meet this season, has excelled in the 55-meter, 55-meter hurdles, and the 200-meter races, compiling eight first-place finishes in 12 final heats. Penn has two first-place finishes and one second in final heats of the 400-meter this season.
Distance 'Cats
Sophomore Joseph Poggi (Derry, NH) and senior Brendan McCarthy (Mansfield, Ma) have both ran distance in every meet this season. Poggi placed first in the 500-meter last week with a time of 1:07.58. He also has a first place finish in the 1000 vs. Maine earlier this season with a time of 2:34.00. McCarthy got his first, first-place finish of the year last week in the 3000-meter, running an 8:35.05.
Pole Vault Tamulonis
Sophomore Alex Tamulonis (Mason, NH) will be pole vaulting this weekend in Rhode Island. Tamulonis placed second last week in the pole vault with his highest jump being 14' 9". His PR was set last year in the America East Indoor Track & Field Championships (Feb. 20-21, 2015) jumping 15 feet, 3 inches.
