Maher, McGovern, Calle Win Gold at Ed Daniels Classic

HOOKSETT, N,H. – Seniors Kyran Maher (Andover, Mass.) and Liam McGovern (North Kingstown, R.I.), as well as freshman Rio Calle (Weare, N.H.), of the University of New Hampshire men's track & field team all won gold at the SNHU Ed Daniels Classic, which was held Saturday at Mark A. Ouellette Stadium.

McGovern and fellow seniors Caden Zalenski (Milford, N.H.) and Jack Washam (Nashua, N.H.) swept the top three podium spots in the hammer throw – UNH entered the weekend ranked #4 nationally in the hammer squad. McGovern earned gold as he led the field of 16 competitors all six rounds. He recorded a toss of 61.52m that only he would best with two throws in the 62's, two in the 63's and the winning mark of 64.31m (211-0 feet) in the fifth round.
Zalenski ascended to second place in the second round and recorded his top effort of 59.5m (195-2) on his last attempt. Already entrenched in third place, Washam's counting mark of 57.67 was on his last throw.
Maher bested a field of 13 competitors to win gold in the pole vault by clearing a height of 4.40m (14-5.25). He passed on every height leading up to 4.40m and was on the verge of ending the meet with no height until the last of his three attempts. None of the other three pole vaulters who advanced to 4.40m cleared the bar.
Calle captured top honors in the long jump with a leap of 6.90 meters (22-7.75 inches). His first attempt of 6.43m ranked second, as did his second jump of 6.51m. Calle moved to the top of the leaderboard with his winning mark of 6.90m in the third round. His last attempt of 6.73m would have also bested the field of 27 competitors.
Earlier in the meet, Calle anchored UNH'S 4x100m relay that placed fifth with a time of 43.0 seconds. Sophomore James Gecek (High Bridge, N.J.), freshman Evan Wong (Beverly, Mass.) and sophomore Danny Anderson (Naugatuck, Conn.) ran the first three legs.
Gecek went on to finish third in Heat 3 and seventh overall among 39 runners in the 400m with a time of 49.70.
Senior Yoofi Abaka-Amuah (Worcester, Mass.) placed third in the discus with a mark of 48.11m (157-10). Abaka-Amuah was in first place after the first round and ranked second through two rounds. He moved to third in Round 3 and then recorded his best throw of the day on his fourth attempt, but remained in third place.
Freshman Shawn Boudreau (Hudson, N.H.) held steady in fifth place all six rounds of the discus, which included his top throw of 45.81m (150-3) on his second attempt. Senior Max LaPointe (Amesbury, Mass.) finished eighth on his second-round mark of 44.81m (147-0).
Sophomore Porter Hurteau (Milton, Vt.) ran the 1,500m-800m double. He raced to third place in the 1,500m with a time of 4:04.66; there were a total of 40 runners in three heats. Hurteau was fourth through the 300m and 700m intervals and moved up to second place with one lap remaining; he recorded his top split of 1:04.08 on that last lap. Hurteau went on to finish ninth in the 800n with a clocking of 1:59.58.
Senior Nathan Fletcher (Portsmouth, N.H.) won Heat 2 of the 400m hurdles in 54.64 seconds and that time was third best overall among the 17 hurdlers. Adnerson, who ran in the first heat, placed eighth with a time of 59.51.
Sophomore Sam Grube (Dover, N.H.) finished fourth in the high jump at a height of 1.93m (6-4). Grube cleared both 1.78m and 1.83m on his first attempt, then advanced past 1.88m and 1.93m on his second attempt; he did not clear the next mark of 1.98m.
Sophomore Carter Norton (East Greenbush, N.Y.) was fifth across the finish line in Heat 1 of the 800m run and finished in seventh place overall with a time of 1:57.73.
The meet ended with the 4x400m with the UNH quartet of sophomore Christian Cerullo (Yardley, Pa.), Norton, Anderson and Gecek finishing in fifth place with a time of 3:30.24.
The UNH men's track & field team returns to action April 17-18 with the George Davis Invitational at UMass Lowell.
The next home meet – also Senior Day – is the Wildcat Invitational on April 24-25.
