Murphy's Fifth-Place Finish in 5,000m Highlights Friar Invite

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior John Murphy (Deerfield, N.H.) raced to fifth place in the 5,000-meter run to highlight the University of New Hampshire men's track & field team's results at the Friar Invitational, which was held Friday at Providence College's Ray Treacy Track at Hendricken Field.

Murphy finished in fifth place in the 5,000m invitational race with a time of 14 minutes, 28.49 seconds. He was in sixth place at the completion of laps five and six but then was 11th at the end of Lap 9. Murphy improved his splits each of the last three laps, including finishing with his fastest 400m of 1:04.90 in the last lap. There were a total of 20 runners in the event.
Senior Zachary Hooper (Concord, N.H.), running in the 3,000m steeplechase for the first time this season, ran a personal-best time of 9:22.67 in the event to finish in 11th place in a field of 19 competitors.
Junior Julian Rime (New City, N.Y.) and sophomore Gavin Malark (Stratham, N.H.) placed 12th and 14th, respectively, in the open mile; they finished 5-6 in Heat 4. Rime opened with his fastest split of 1:00.75 in the first lap and crossed the finish line in 4:14.71. Malark, whose first-lap split of 1:01.71 was also his fastest, had a time of 4:15.20.
Sophomore Carson Eames (Littleton, N.H.) placed 17th in a field of 32 runners in the open 5,000m with a time of 15:13.25. He finished with his fastest 400m split of 1:10.46 on the final lap – Lap 12.
Freshman Ryan Zumbach (Hampton, N.H.) finished third in Heat 2 and 17th place overall in the 800m with a time of 1:54.96. His split times were 55.50 seconds for the first lap and 59.46 for the second.
The UNH men's track & field team returns to action April 11 at the Ed Daniels Classic (at SNHU).
The next home meet is the Wildcat Invitational on April 24-25.
