McGovern Leads Men's Throwers at Virginia Challenge, George Davis Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. and LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Liam McGovern (North Kingstown, R.I.) led a contingent of three University of New Hampshire men's track & field throwers with second place in the hammer throw at the Virginia Challenge on Friday night at the University of Virginia's Lannigan Field.
A total of three Wildcat throwers competed at the Virginia Challenge and four more throwers were at the UMass Lowell George Davis Invitational on Friday.

McGovern finished runner-up in the hammer throw among 33 competitors, which included throwers from Virginia, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, North Carolina, N.C. State, Penn State and Pitt.
He advanced out of the third flight into the finals with a mark of 63.37 meters. McGovern bested that on his fifth attempt at 63.49m and then climbed into second place with an effort of 64.11m (210 feet-4 inches) in the sixth round.
Senior Yoofi Abaka-Amuah (Worcester, Mass.) also advanced to the hammer throw finals at the Virginia Challenge. He entered the last three rounds in seventh place with a personal-best mark of 60.39m (198-1) and remained there the rest of the way.
Abaka-Amuah went on to finish 14th in a field of 37 competitors in the shot put with a throw of 17.40m (57-1). He recorded a mark of 17.27m on his first attempt and bested that with his scoring mark in the third round.
GEORGE DAVIS INVITATIONAL
Senior Jack Washam (Nashua, N.H.) topped a field of 21 throwers in the hammer at the George Davis Invitational with a mark of 57.36m (188-2). Washam went to the top of the leaderboard on his first attempt of 54.51m and increased the margin of victory with the winning throw of 57.36m in the second round.
Freshmen Shawn Beaudreau (Hudson, N.H.) and Noah Buchanan (Murrieta, Calif.) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the shot put. Beaudreau put himself into the finals with his first throw of 14.51m and edged that with a mark of 14.54m (47-8.5) on his last throw. Buchanan was the only competitor who advanced to the finals from the first flight. His best effort of 14.31m (46-11.5) was on his first attempt.
The UNH men's track & field team returns to action April 18 for Day 2 of the George Davis Invitational at UMass Lowell. Two Wildcats will compete at the Virginia Challenge.
The next home meet – also Senior Day – is the Wildcat Invitational on April 24-25.
