Pogue’s 26 Points, Lai’s Clutch Shot Give ’Cats 4th Straight Win
12/1/2016 9:29:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BOSTON – Junior center Carlie Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio) poured in a career-high 26 points and notched her second double-double of the season and junior guard Brittni Lai (Irvington, N.Y.) nailed a clutch three-pointer to lead the UNH women's basketball team to its fourth straight win, 66-63 in overtime, over Northeastern University in the Cabot Center on Thursday night.
Pogue had 13 rebounds, including several key ones down the stretch. Lai scored 19 points and it was her trey at the buzzer at the end of regulation – a play started by a Pogue rebound - that sent the game to overtime.
Junior forward Kat Fogarty (Westminster, Mass.) had 12 points, four assists and three rebounds.
The finish of the game was eerily similar to UNH's last trip to the Cabot Center. Two years ago, the Wildcats beat Northeastern, 63-62, on a Kristen Anderson (Greene, Maine) shot from just beyond half court. Anderson is now a senior and on Thursday night she took the pass from Pogue and got the ball up to Lai to set up the game-tying shot.
The Wildcats improved to 5-2 on the season. Northeastern fell 2-6.

HIGHLIGHTS
This was Pogue's second double-double of the season. She started the season with 20 points and 13 rebounds in a loss at Cornell. She had one double-double last year and five as a freshman. Her previous high in points was 24 against Daniel Webster College on Dec. 7, 2014 during her freshman year.
Pogue had six points and three rebounds in the overtime period.
Junior guard Aliza Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) led UNH with five assists and had four points and four rebounds.
Sophomore forward Ashley Storey (Cumberland, Maine) had four points and six rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Led by Francesca Sally's eight points, Northeastern opened an 18-12 lead after one period. Sally had six more points in the second period and the Huskies extended the lead to 18-12.
Lai had nine points in the first half for UNH and Pogue had eight points and five rebounds.
The Wildcats made only one of their nine three-point attempts in the opening half. Northeastern made four of its 11.
UNH tightened up its defense and cut the Northeastern lead to 42-37 after three periods.
The fourth period was tight all the way and Lai's three-pointer at the buzzer – thanks in large part to another Pogue rebound – got it to OT at 56-56.
A Lai layup off the jump ball to start OT gave UNH its first lead since 2-0 and a Fogarty turnaround in the lane made it 60-56 and the Wildcats were on their way.
