UNH Breaks School Record with 28 Steals
DURHAM, N.H. – Junior guard Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.) recorded 26 points and eight steals as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team defeated New England College, 76-29, on Sunday afternoon at Lundholm Gym.
DeChent was a highly-efficient 11 of 14 shooting from the floor, including 3-for-4 on 3-pointers, in 17 minutes, 31 seconds of playing time.
Graduate student guard Sydney Lusher (Oneida, N.Y.) was UNH's next leading scorer with nine points and sophomore guard Elizabeth Lavoie (Hampstead, N.H.) recorded eight points, four rebounds and four steals.
UNH, which broke the program record with 28 steals, improved to 2-3 overall by remaining undefeated at home (2-0).
This was an exhibition game for New England College (1-1 record). The Pilgrims were led by Camryn Lewis' nine points and game-high 10 rebounds.

FIRST QUARTER
- DeChent scored first with a driving layup at 9:43 to put the 'Cats up 2-0, followed up by two 3-pointers for an 8-point run.
- The Wildcats scored the first 21 points of the game until Lewis' layup put the Pilgrims on the board to make it 21-2 at 4:18.
- UNH held the lead through 10 minutes and closed the quarter ahead 27-9.
SECOND QUARTER
- At 9:06 of the second quarter, Kaira Creary added two points for the Pilgrims to make it 27-11.
- Lusher sank a 3-pointer at 8:38 to extend the UNH lead to 30-11.
- With 6:11 on the clock, DeChent scored a 3-pointer that ignited an 18-point run for the 'Cats to extend the lead to 50-13. During the run, DeChent had seven points, junior guard Katie Ledden (Clark, N.J.) and graduate student guard Kenzie Matulonis (Raynham, Mass.) had four points each, and junior guard Kassidy Thompson (Mullica Hill, N.J.) put up three.
- Bailey Burke added two points for New England to close out the half and the Wildcats held a 50-15 lead on a .656 field goal percentage (21-for-32).
THIRD QUARTER
- Senior Camryn Fauria (North Attleborough, Mass.) opened the third quarter with two points, followed by a 3-pointer from Matulonis.
- Senior forward Lucia Melero (Barcelona, Spain) sparked another 8-point run for UNH to extend the lead 67-18. Melero had five consecutive points during the run, and junior guard Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) had a 3-pointer.
- With 2:31 left in the quarter, Lusher sank another 3-pointer for the 'Cats to close the quarter with a 70-20 lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
- New England had the first points of the quarter when Nyah Belton scored on a layup at 7:38.
- Freshman forward Averie Harding (Egg Harbor Twownship, N.J.) scored a layup with two minutes on the clock to cap the scoring.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- UNH's 28 steals surpassed the previous programs benchmark of 24 established Jan. 27, 1980 against Vermont.
- DeChent has scored 25+ points in 3 of 5 games this season.
- In 16 minutes, Matulonis recorded seven points, four steals and five assists.
- Lusher scored nine points on three 3-pointers for the second consecutive game. She made 3 of 4 attempts Sunday vs. NEC.
- Melero finished with a season-high seven points, and she matched her career highs of three assists and two steals.
- Fauria had a career-high four assists.
- Harding recorded her first three points as a Wildcat with a layup and a free throw.
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH shot a season-high 54.4% (31 of 57) from the floor while holding NEC to 28.2% (11-39).
- UNH recorded 28 steals, which accounted for a 38-9 scoring edge in points off turnovers.
