UNH Wins Season Opener, 72-32, vs. Worcester State

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior guard Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.) led four double-digit scorers with 16 points as the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team defeated Worcester State University, 72-32, in Monday night's season opener at Lundholm Gym.
 
Sophomore guard Elizabeth Lavoie (Hampstead, N.H.) recorded 14 points, two rebounds and two steals in her first career start. Junior guards Katie Ledden (Clark, N.J.) and Kassidy Thompson (Mullica Hill, N.J.) both finished with 10 points and game-high six rebounds in their first game as a Wildcat.
 
Junior guard Maggie Cavanaugh (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) had a career-high six steals; her other stats included four points, five rebounds and a team-high three assists.
 
UNH is 1-0 while this was an exhibition game for the Lancers, who were led offensively by Mia Hanyes' 14 points.

FIRST QUARTER
- DeChent scored UNH's first points of the season on a layup to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead at 8:53.
 - Worcester State took its only lead of the game, 5-4, on Hannah Lomonaco's 3-pointer at 6:23.
 - Camryn Fauria (North Attleborough, Mass.) put New Hampshire back in front, 6-5, with a layup that ignited a 10-0 run.
 
- Carolina Williams (Valatie, N.Y.) beat the buzzer to give UNH a 16-7 lead through 10 minutes.
 
SECOND QUARTER
- Fauria's 3-pointer extended the advantage to 10 points, 21-11, at 6:13.
 
- UNH closed the quarter on an 8-0 spurt – fueled by Lavoie's seven points – in the last four minutes to take a 33-17 lead into halftime.
 
THIRD QUARTER
- The Wildcats opened the third quarter with five consecutive points to extend the overall run to 13-0 and the lead to 38-17.
 - The Lancers trimmed the deficit to 14 points, 39-25, on another Haynes 3-pointer at 3:55.
 
- UNH closed the quarter on a 9-0 run, however, to extend the margin to 48-25. Cavanaugh sparked the spurt with two steals that she converted into transition layups.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
- The 'Cats once again continued a quarter-ending run into the next one, as New Hampshire scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to push the overall run to 19-0 and lead to 58-25.
 - Ledden and Thompson both scored four points during the fourth-quarter surge.
 
- The differential grew to 40 points, 69-29, on Lavoie's 3-pointer at 3:19 and got s high as 41, 70-29, on a free throw by Alia Cordone (Davis, Calif.).
 
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Ledden finished with career highs in both points (10) and rebounds (six); she tied her high of two steals.
 - Fauria, Kent, Ledden and Thompson – all transfers – made their UNH debuts.
 - All three freshmen – Cordone, Averie Harding (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and Williams – also played in their first game as Wildcats.
 
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH shot 46.8% (29 of 62) from the floor while holding WSU to 27.5% (11-40).
 - The Wildcats had a 37-32 rebounding advantage that included 17-10 on the offensive glass, which led to a 12-2 scoring advantage in second chance points.
 - UNH recorded 19 steals, which accounted for a 28-7 scoring edge in points off turnovers, and committed 12 turnovers.
 
- The 'Cats outscored the Lancers 52-10 in the paint as well as 16-2 in fast break points.
