WHAT HAPPENED
In the first period, senior forward Maxim Gaudreault (Annapolis, Md.) gave the Wildcats an excellent chance on their first power play of the night. Gaudreault received the puck inside the faceoff circle to the left of Providence netminder Nick Ellis. He ripped a wrist shot on net towards the top corner, but Ellis corralled the shot.
On the other end of the ice, Providence's Mark Jankowski tried to get the Friars on the board just over midway through the first period. He fired a shot from the slot that Wildcat goalie Danny Tirone (Trumbull, Conn.) saved to thwart the threat.
After the first period of play, both teams were scoreless. Tirone had made saves on all 11 shots faced while Ellis had 10 saves.
At 3:38 of the second period, the Friars got onto the board on a goal by Trevor Mingoia. The play started when Bryan Lemons gained possession of the puck behind the Wildcat goal and played it to Jankowski. Jankowski fired a shot on net that Tirone saved, but Mingoia followed up and buried the rebound.
Providence took a 2-0 lead at 2:33 of the third period as Jankowski fired a wrister to the low corner of the net. Jake Walman played the puck to Mingoia who then found Jankowski just inside the UNH zone. Jankowski skated across the slot and put his wrist shot away past the outstretched leg of Tirone.
Junior Tyler Kelleher (Longmeadow, Mass.) got UNH on the board at 11:15 of the third period with his seventh goal of the season and first since Nov. 21 against Boston College. Sophomore blueliner Cameron Marks (North Vancouver, British Columbia) initiated the play as he dumped the puck down and behind the Providence net. Sophomore forward Andrew Poturalski (Williamsville, N.Y.) gained control of the puck and skated from Ellis' right to left near the redline. He dished a pass to Kelleher who was waiting on the back door and fired a one-timer into the net.
The Friars gained a 3-1 lead with 25 seconds left in the third period on an empty net goal by Steven McParland. Tom Parisi played the puck up the boards in the PC zone to McParland who punched it out and into the neutral zone. He lined up his shot and put it away for the goal.
