Women’s Cross Country Opens Season With A Second-Place Finish

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Amber Short (Keene, N.H.) placed fifth overall to lead the University of New Hampshire women's cross country team to a second-place finish in the three-team meet, Saturday morning.
Providence College and the College of the Holy Cross joined the 'Cats for their only home meet of the season. Providence finished first overall with 16 points and Holy Cross collected third with 78 points.
Short completed the 5K race in 17 minutes, 39.96 seconds to lead all Wildcat runners. Seniors Samantha Blais (Lyndeborough, N.H.) and Brianna Boden (Keene, N.H.) finished seventh (18:05.10) and eighth (18:22.44) overall, respectively. Junior Sarah Keiran (Rowley, Mass.) broke the tape in 18:32.22 for ninth place while freshman Shannon Murdock (Exeter, N.H.) finished 10th, in a time of 18:35.69.
To round out the Wildcat scoring, junior Alex Giese (Franklin, Mass.) finished 14th overall (19:08.92) and sophomore Amanda Szymanski (Londonderry, N.H.) collected 15th (19:18.31).
New Hampshire competes next Saturday (Sept. 12) at Stony Brook University for the Pre-Conference Meet.
