Albers Lifts Men's Soccer to 1-0 Victory over UMass
9/19/2015 9:35:00 PM | Men's Soccer
DURHAM, N.H. – Senior A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.) scored the lone goal of the game as the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team defeated the University of Massachusetts Saturday night by a score of 1-0 at Bremner Field.
The Wildcats remain unbeaten as they improve to 5-0-1 and are off to their best start since the 2008 season (4-0-2) through six games. The Minutemen fall to 1-7-0 with the loss.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute of play as Albers tallied his second goal of the season. The play started when Nabi lobbed a cross in from the left side into the box. Albers connected with the cross with his head and found the back of the net.
Junior Chris Wingate (Hovik, Norway) nearly got the Wildcats on the board in the seventh minute of play with a rocket shot from the top of the box that ricocheted off the crossbar. Senior Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) headed the rebound at the net, but UMass keeper Bardia Asefnia made a save to thwart the play.
UMass' Mark Dunphy made a bid in the 24th minute of play as he corralled the ball outside of the box and fired a shot. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Carpenter (Newmarket, N.H.) scooped the shot up to make the save. The Wildcats threatened in the 30th minute as senior Jimmy Petruccelli (Newfields, N.H.) ripped a low shot on net that made its way through traffic and on net. Asefnia made a save on the play, but the rebound made its way to senior Ben Ramin (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), but the attempt was blocked.
At the end of the first half, the game remained tied at 0-0. The Wildcats outshot the Minutemen by an amount of 12-3. Each goaltender made two saves in the half.
The Wildcats attacked early in the second half as Wingate fired a shot from just inside the box, but his bid went just wide.
The Minutemen nearly tied the game in the 60th minute with Zach Samson fired a shot from the left side of net to the far side of the net, but Carpenter came up with a huge diving save to keep UMass off the board.
Nabi nearly got his third point of the game in the 78th minute of play as he ripped a shot from just outside the 18-yard line. His shot hit the crossbar and bounced out of play.
At the end of the match, the Wildcats posted a clean sheet for the 1-0 win. The shutout was the third consecutive and of the season. Carpenter made a total of four saves in the game as his record improves to 4-0-1. Asefnia made four saves on five shots faced. His record falls to 1-6-0. The Wildcats outshot the Minutemen 17-9 in the match.
