Wildcats Remain Unbeaten, Improve to 6-0-1
BOSTON – Junior midfielder Riley Ellis (Goffstown, N.H.) scored his first career goal as the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team defeated Northeastern University Tuesday evening, 1-0. The match took place at Parsons Field on the campus of NU.
The Wildcats remain unbeaten, improving to 6-0-1 on the season. The team also posted its fourth-consecutive win and shutout. The Huskies fall to 0-4-2 in the decision.
Ellis' goal came in the 48th minute of play that would ultimately prove to be the game winner. The play started with a barrage of UNH shots, one of which was blocked by the team and the other saved by NU keeper Jonathan Thuresson. After the ball bounced to the top of the box on a rebound, Ellis ripped a shot on net that made its way through traffic and into the net.
In the first half, the Wildcats piled on the offense early as senior Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) recorded the first three shots of the game. Classmate Ben Ramin (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) nearly got the 'Cats on the board in the 27th minute of play as he fired a shot at the goal, however his bid hit the post. In the 32nd minute, senior A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.) connected with a corner kick by classmate Jimmy Petruccelli (Newfields, N.H.) with a header, but his attempt was just wide to the right of the net.
At the end of the first half, the two teams were locked in a scoreless draw. Nabi had tallied six shots on his own while the team totaled 11 in the first half. The Huskies were limited to just three shots.
After Ellis' goal to start the second half, rookie Chris Arling (Windham, N.H.) fired a pair of shots in succession. His first one was saved by Thuresson while his second attempt was to the right of the net. New Hampshire kept the offense coming as they would end up firing a total of eight shots in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Carpenter (Newmarket, N.H.) made his second save of the game late in the second half as the Huskies were looking for the equalizer. Mike Lobben attempted to score in the 81st minute, but Carpenter was there to make the save.
At the end of the match, the Wildcats remained undefeated as they topped the Huskies, 1-0. Carpenter made a total of two saves to preserve the shutout for UNH. His record improves to 5-0-1 on the year. Thuresson made six saves on seven shots faced. His record falls to 0-3-1. UNH outshot the Huskies by a total of 19-7 in the game.
UNH returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 26 as the team travels to Columbia University for a match under the lights at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. The game is slated to start at 7 p.m.
