Penn Tops 400-meter Race; Men’s Track & Field Wins Jay Carisella Invitational

BOSTON – Senior Isaiah Penn (Boston) placed first overall in the 400-meter dash to lead the University of New Hampshire men's track & field team to a first-place finish at the Jay Carisella Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Track, Saturday night.
The Wildcats scored 189 points to lead all seven programs participating.
Penn broke the tape in 48.71 seconds to open his indoor track & field season this year. Junior Christopher Poggi (Dover, N.H.) placed first overall in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:04.53 while his sibling sophomore Joseph Poggi (Derry, N.H.) placed second overall (1:56.71) in the 800-meter dash behind first-place finisher, junior Jacob Kittredge (Amherst, N.H.), with a time of 1:56.53 for a new career-low time.
Junior Ryan Chiesa (Stockholm, N.J.) set a new personal-best time in the 1-mile race, breaking the tape in 4:17.43. The Wildcats claimed three of the top five times with freshman Cody Symonds (Alton, N.H.) placing third overall (4:24.28) and classmate William Ulrich (Mineola, N.Y.) securing the fourth-best time (4:24.54).
Junior Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.) recorded his second straight top finish in the weight throw with a distance of 63 feet, 10.50 inches. Senior Sam Gagnon (Hooksett, N.H.) recorded a second-place time of 14:55.00 in the 5,000-meter race for his second, second-place finish this season.
Senior D'Mahl McFadden (Penacook, N.H.) recorded an 8.22-second time in the 60-meter hurdle in the final round. Sophomore Alex Tamulonis (Mason, N.H.) recorded a third-place height of 14 feet, 3.25 inches in the pole vault.
The Wildcats have about a month off from competition and won't compete again until Saturday, January 16, 2015 when they host the College of the Holy Cross at the Paul Sweet Oval.
