DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's track & field team restarts the season after the holiday break with the College of the Holy Cross (Jan. 14; 11 a.m.), Saturday afternoon at the Paul Sweet Oval.
The Wildcats look to shake off the rust following a month-long break. The throws events begin at 11 a.m. followed by the running events at 1p.m. With five weeks left until the conference championship (Feb. 19-20), UNH looks to improve each meet.
Pacing Penn
Senior Isaiah Penn (Boston) ran a first-place time (48.71 seconds) in the 400-meter dash at the Jay Carisella Invitational. The senior is racing in his first indoor season since the 2014 season where he claimed second (48.67) at the America East Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 400-meter dash.
Throw Some More
Junior Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.) claimed his second consecutive first-place finish in the weight throw with a distance of 63 feet, 10.50 inches, which set a new meet record. This was after setting a new school record in the event (67 feet, four inches) in the season opener against the University of Maine. Sophomore Nicholas Ritzo (Rye, N.H.) placed second in the season opening meet with a shot put distance of 48 feet, 10.75 inches. He also claimed silver in the weight throw with a toss of 48 feet, 10.75 inches.
Too Fast, Too Furious
Senior D'Mahl McFadden (Penacook, N.H.) completed one event last weekend, securing second overall in the 60-meter hurdles. His time of 8.22 seconds is .03 seconds away from his personal best in the event. Senior Christopher DeCarlo (Chester, N.H.) looks to improve in the 200-meter dash while senior Dylan Pelletier (Orford, N.H.) placed 15th overall in the 60-meter dash (7.298 seconds) a meet ago.
Goin' the Distance
Junior Christopher Poggi (Dover, N.H.) enters the meet following a first place finish in the 500-meter dash (1:04.53). Poggi also claimed first in the 800-meter dash (1:54.41) in the season-opener against Maine. Senior captain Brendan McCarthy (Mansfield, Mass.) helped the distance group last meet, finishing fifth in the 5,000-meter race (15:27.52) as one of the top-3 Wildcats in the top-5.
