BOSTON – Sophomore Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) and senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) headlined five University of New Hampshire Wildcats with America East All-Conference honors, announced by the conference on Wednesday.
Murphy was awarded the America East Striker of the Year and named to the America East All-Conference First Team following her play this season. Murray earned America East Midfielder of the Year and was placed on the America East All-Conference First and All-Academic Teams. Senior captain Kirsten O'Neil (Hampton, N.H.) is the third Wildcat named to the All-Conference First Team while freshman Gaby Dorsey (Hubertus, Wis.) has been named to the All-Rookie Team as one of the best rookies in the conference. Lastly, Murray is joined by junior goalkeeper Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) on the All-Academic Team.
UNH hasn't had a member on the first team since 2011 when Monique Lamotte was named to the team. The last time three Wildcat student-athletes were named to the first team was back in 2004.
Murphy secured the America East Striker of the Year award, the first for UNH since Chiara Best won it in 2004, after leading the league in both points (26) and goals (11). The sophomore has totaled seven goals in eight conference games and also dished out four assists on the season. Last year, Murphy was named to the All-Rookie Team, All-Conference Second Team, and All-Championship Team. In addition, she was recognized on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Northeast Region Second Team and TopDrawerSoccer Division I Best XI Freshman Second Team. Both honors this season were a first for the Massachusetts native.
Murray closed out the regular season with eight assists to pace the conference, earning herself the America East Midfielder of the Year, the first for the program since Caitlin Whelan in 2007, and All-Conference First Team honors. Along with the assist numbers, Murray has scored one goal this season for 10 points total, ranking second on the team. In 2014, Murray was selected to the All-Conference Second Team and All-Championship Team. Regionally, Murray was recognized on the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association All-New England Second Team last year. In the classroom, Murray has had the same success, being named a member of the NSCAA All-East Academic Third Team, the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll and the National College Athletic Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma in 2014.
O'Neil earned the first All-Conference honor of her Wildcat career this season. She has scored one goal and recorded five shots in 17 starts. O'Neil was a member of the All-Tournament Team at the TD Bank Classic earlier this season and captained a back line that helped accumulate five shutouts. She has been on the America East Academic Honor Roll in 2013 and 2014 and was a NSCAA Academic All-East Region Honorable Mention in 2014.
Dorsey wrapped up her first regular season as a Wildcat, ranking fifth on the team in points (four) with two goals. She played in 17 games with six starts on the season. Her first collegiate goal came in a 6-0 win over Binghamton University (Sept. 27), followed by a goal at Stony Brook University (Oct. 11). Dorsey tallied 11 shots playing in both midfield and forward positions in 2015.
Goalkeeper Borkan is a repeat selection to the All-Academic Team. In 2014, she was a member of the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll, America East All-Tournament Team, and NSCAA All-Northeast Region Third Team. In addition, she was named the America East Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. This season, Borkan has started in all 18 games, recording four shutouts and 79 saves.
Defending champion New Hampshire will play in its second straight postseason Thursday, Oct. 29 (7 p.m.) when they travel to the University of Maine for the America East Championship quarterfinals at Mahaney Diamond. With a win, the 'Cats would play a rematch of last year's finals against the University of Hartford on Sunday, Nov. 1 at Al-Marzook Field in the semifinal round.
