Schlatter Propels Men's Soccer to 1-0 Victory against Fairfield

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Senior David Schlatter (Marlton, N.J.) helped the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Fairfield Sunday in the final game of the Mayor's Cup at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y.

The win improves UNH to 2-2-0 on the year while Fairfield falls to 1-1-1 overall. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Carpenter (Newmarket, N.H.) made his first career start in net for the Wildcats in the game.

In the 14^th minute of play, Fairfield's Jordan Emsley fired the first shot of the game. The attempt went wide of the net. UNH marched up the field as Ben Ramin (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) notched the first shot on net in the 20^th minute, but the bid was turned aside by Stag keeper Matt Turner. Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine) put a header on net in the 25^th minute of play, but Turner made the save.

Fairfield's Jordan Ayris put a shot wide in the 38^th minute while Jake Zuniga gave Carpenter his first test in the 43^rd minute. The netminder made the save on the play. With 50 seconds left in the first half, Connor Pauley (Londonderry, N.H.) was on the receiving end of a service into the box and put a header on net, but Turner made the save. At the end of the first half, the score was tied, 0-0.

Carpenter came up with another save in the 47^th minute of play on a shot by Zuniga. New Hampshire retaliated with a header by Riley Ellis (Goffstown, N.H.) in the 60^th minute, but Turner again made the save. The Wildcats broke the stalemate in the 66^th minute when Schlatter netted his first goal of the season. Will Rasid (Wilbraham, Mass.) played a corner kick into the box to start the play. The corner kick was won by Pauley who, in turn, found Schlatter. The senior blasted a shot into the back of the net to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.

In the 78^th minute, John Sullivan attempted to tie the game up with a shot on goal, but Carpenter made the save. Fairfield's Kalle Ronn had a shot blocked in the 80^th minute while Carpenter again made a save in the 83^rd minute on a shot by Martin Lindgren. He made his fifth and final save of the game in the 87^th minute on a shot by George Newton to earn his first career shutout. At the end of 90 minute, UNH took a 1-0 victory.

The Wildcats held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal in the game while the total shots were tied, 9-9. UNH had the only three corner kicks of the game.

The Wildcats return to action on Friday, Sept. 12 as they travel to Air Force for an afternoon tilt. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
