Wingate Lifts Men's Soccer to 1-0 Win in Overtime against Saint Peter's

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Sophomore Christopher Wingate (Hovik, Norway) lifted the Wildcats to a 1-0 victory over Saint Peter's College in the 94th minute of play Friday evening at the Mayor's Cup, hosted at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y.
The win puts the Wildcats to 1-2-0 on the year while Saint Peter's falls to 0-2-0 on the season. Wingate's goal was the first of the season for New Hampshire.
UNH brought the pressure in the opening minutes of the game with a pair of corner kicks in the first two minutes. David Schlatter (Marlton, N.J.) connected with the second corner kick, however his shot was blocked. Wingate sent another corner kick into the box and found Duff Thomson (Greenfield, N.H.) who put a header attempt just wide of the net. A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.) and Erik Martel (Bedford, N.H.) each put shots just shy of the target in the 15th and 22nd minute.
Saint Peter's sparked some offense in the 33rd minute with a header by Luke Fairlamb that went wide of the net. Fairlamb put another shot on goal in the 37th minute, however it was denied by keeper Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.). Chris Stragepede and Dor Uzan also put shots on goal, but Worra stood strong and thwarted the shots.
At the end of the first half, the score was deadlocked, 0-0. Saint Peter's outshot New Hampshire 6-4, while UNH held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Gunnar Ericsson (Atkinson, N.H.) opened the second half of the game with the first shot on goal for UNH. In the 49th minute, Ericsson connected with a serve into the box with a header, but Peacock goalkeeper David Giddings made the save. Riley Ellis (Goffstown, N.H.) kept the offense rolling in the 64th minute with a blast that went just high of the net.
On the other end of the field, Fairlamb aimed another shot at the UNH net, but Worra made the save to preserve the tie. In the 66th minute, Will Rasid (Wilbraham, Mass.) sent a corner kick into the box and connected with Fazal Nabi (Portland, Maine), but the shot attempt was blocked and cleared away.
Jesus Tudela (Zaragoza, Spain) put a corner kick into the mixer in the 75th minute that resulted with a shot by Rasid, however the attempt was just high.
Fairlamb made another bid 87th minute with a shot that Worra denied out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, Fredy Umanzor connected with the service but sent his shot wide. With the final seconds of the half expiring, Albers put a header attempt on net with four seconds left that hit the post. At the end of regulation, the score remained tied and the match was set for overtime. New Hampshire held a 10-9 advantage in shots and a 7-2 lead in corner kicks. Worra had made saves on all five shots faced while Giddings made a save on the only shot on goal he faced.
In the opening minutes of overtime, Wingate lifted the Wildcats to victory with the game-winning goal. Schlatter initiated the play to earn the assist. Worra did not face a shot in the overtime frame as he earned a five-save shutout, his first of the season.
The Wildcats return to action in the second game of the tournament when they play Fairfield University on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 12 p.m.
