AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Duff Thomson (Greenfield, N.H.) scored the only goal of the game as the University of New Hampshire men's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory at the University of Massachusetts Sunday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Carpenter (Newmarket, N.H.) posted a five-save shutout in the effort.
The win brings UNH to 4-4-1 on the year while the Minutemen fall to 1-7-0.
UMass garnered the first attempt of the game in the second minute of play with a shot by Peter Alvarenga, but Carpenter made the save on the play. The same sequence happened in the seventh minute of play as well. Lukas Goerigk (Berlin, Germany) got the first shot-on-goal attempt of the game for UNH in the 20th minute with a blast, but Minutemen keeper Ryan Buckingham thwarted the shot.
Jesus Tudela (Zaragoza, Spain) notched a shot in the 24th minute of play, but it too was saved by Buckingham. UMass' Mark Morris fired a shot that was saved out of bounds by Carpenter. The UNH netminder came up with another save on Alvarenga.
The next shot-on-goal for either team came in the 45th minute of play for the Wildcats as Thomson blasted a one-timer through traffic in the box and into the goal. The goal was the first of the season for Thomson as he was assisted by Will Rasid (Wilbraham, Mass.).
At the end of the first half, UNH held a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats held a slight 8-7 advantage in total shots. Carpenter made saves on all four shots faced while Buckingham saved two of the three shots UNH sent his way.
Senior Paul Bianchi (Essex, Vt.) notched a shot attempt in the 68th minute, but Buckingham kept the UMass deficit at one after making the save. With the second half coming to a close, UMass put pressure on the Wildcats. Alvarenga sent a shot at the UNH net with under a minute to play in regulation, but Carpenter remained resilient and saved the shot to preserve the lead. As the final seconds expired, UNH held on for a 1-0 victory.
UNH and UMass each had 11 shots in the game. Carpenter made saves on all five shots the Minutemen put on target while Buckingham saved three of four shots faced.
The Wildcats are back in action as they open the America East Conference slate Saturday, Oct. 4 at Stony Brook University. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
