DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team fell in the home opener by a score of 2-0 to Bryant University Sunday afternoon at Bremner Field. The loss drops the Wildcats to 0-2-0 on the young season while Bryant improves to 1-1-0.
The Wildcats generated the first offensive attempt when Andrew Chaput (Manchester, N.H.) played a ball in over the top. David Schlatter (Marlton, N.J.) beat the keeper and sent a header attempt that rolled just wide of the net. In the 27th minute, Christopher Wingate (Hovik, Norway) ripped a shot from just outside of the box that nearly hit the target, however it went just wide.
A.J. Albers (Eagan, Minn.) helped keep the pressure on with a header in the 37th minute, but Bryant's Chris Knaub made the save on the play. Bryant's only shot on goal of the half came in the 26th minute when Brett Larocque fired a shot on target, but Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.) denied the shot.
At the end of the first half, the score was deadlocked, 0-0. UNH held a 7-4 advantage in shots, 7-4.
Bryant took a 1-0 lead when Brett Larocque fired a shot from 20 yards out at the net. The ball hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced over the line and into the net. The score came in the 48th minute of play.
The Wildcats remained resilient and kept the attack coming. Connor Pauley (Londonderry, N.H.) launched a throw-in into the box and connected with Wingate's head, but Knaub came up with the point blank save to preserve the advantage for the Bulldogs. Tudela nearly tied the game in the 66th minute when he placed a one-time shot just over the net.
In the 81st minute, Bryant extended its advantage to 2-0 when Thomas Binder scored. Curtis Orth played a ball down the right flank of the field that Worra came out to make a save on. Binder was just one step ahead and shot the ball over Worra who was on his way down for a save attempt. The ball found the back of the net for the goal.
UNH battled for the remaining minutes as Wingate placed another header attempt on net, however Knaub saved the shot. Erik Martel (Bedford, N.H.) and Albers fired shots in succession in the 86th minute, but both attempts missed the target.
At the end of the match, Bryant held on for a 2-0 win.
Worra made a pair of saves in the game on the four shots he faced. His record falls to 0-2-0 on the young season. Knaub made saves on all five shots he faced from UNH's attack. UNH held an overall advantage in total shots by a mark of 13-11.
