Men's Soccer Edged by Northeastern in Season Opener, 1-0

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The University of New Hampshire men's soccer team fell at Northeastern University by a score of 1-0 in the season opener Friday night. Goalkeeper Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.) made six saves on the seven shots he faced in the match.
Worra made the first save of the game in the 13th minute of play as he denied a header attempt by NU's Ambry Moss off a corner kick. He came up big again in the 17th minute with a save on a shot by Daniel Arvidsson to thwart the Northeastern attack.
Jesus Tudela (Zaragoza, Spain) provided the first shot on goal for the Wildcats in the 22nd minute when he ripped an attempt at NU keeper Jonathan Thuresson, however the shot was saved. Tudela kept the pressure up with a shot in the 24th minute of play that went just wide of the target. Soon after, Worra made a pair of saves, however Northeastern was able to take a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute. NU's Frantzdy Pierrot placed a header into the top corner of the net on a delivery from Arvidsson.
At the end of the first half, the score was 1-0 in favor of Northeastern.
Worra remained resilient in the in the second half and made a save on the first shot he faced in the 69th minute of play. UNH stepped up its offensive pressure when sophomore Christopher Wingate (Hovik, Norway) launched a shot at the NU net. Thuresson made the save on the attempt.
Tudela kept the pressure coming for Unh in the 86th minute with a rip on net, but the ball was saved out of bounds for a corner kick. Tudela lined up and placed the kick inside the box for the Wildcats and connected with junior Andrew Chaput (Manchester, N.H.) on a header, but Thuresson came up with the save to preserve the 1-0 advantage. With time running out, Wingate made a last ditch effort for the equalizer with a header, but his shot went just wide of the target. At the end of the match, the Huskies held on to take a 1-0 victory.
UNH tallied a total of five shots on goal in the effort while Northeastern placed seven on net. NU held a slim advantage in the shot total by a tally of 12-9. The Wildcats earned five corner kicks while the Huskies took just two attempts.
New Hampshire is back in action on Sunday, Aug. 31 in the home opener against Bryant University. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. at Bremner Field.
