Michael Shanahan, a senior (grad student) from Dover, N.H., broke the UNH men's indoor track & field weight throw record for the fourth time this season with a winning mark of 72 feet, 4.5 inches in the Wildcats' dual meet victory against College of the Holy Cross at Paul Sweet Oval on Jan. 20.
Michael's toss of 72-4.5 is the fifth best in NCAA Division I this season. He opened the meet with a weight throw of 21.19 meters and improved that to 21.40m before breaking the record at 22.06m in the third of six throws.
His first-place effort bested the runner-up by more than 15 feet.
Michael, already a two-time America East Field Performer of the Week in 2017-18, previously bested his own school record in the weight throw at Dartmouth College on Dec. 9 with a winning toss of 70-5.75.
In the Dec. 2 season opener at home vs. Maine, Michael broke the school record twice. He first bested the benchmark at 69-3, then one-upped himself with a throw of 69-6.
