Cookman Scores Twice in 4-3 Loss at Vermont

Senior captain Nicole Poulakis (Ajax, Ontario) recorded an assist on both Cookman goals and junior Addison MacNeil (Brentwood, N.H.) scored UNH's other goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Johnson (Walpole, Mass.) made 10 saves and allowed three goals in 55:18 of action. Classmate Kerigan Ross () entered the game with 4:42 remaining and surrendered a goal to get charged with the loss.
UVM was led offensively by Sophia LeFranc (three goals) and goalie Merle Vaandrager made seven saves. Abby Wilber was credited with two defensive saves and LeFranc had one.
UNH moves to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in America East while UVM is now 6-4, 1-0.

- UNH returns to action Oct. 5 (1pm) for a home game against Stonehill.
FIRST QUARTER
- Vermont generated the edge in both shots (8-2) and penalty corners (4-1) in the opening 15 minutes but the score was tied 1-1 at the end of one.
- Cookman gave UNH an early 1-0 lead when she swept in a one-timer to the right of the penalty-stroke dot at 1:07. Poulakis corralled a pass at midfield and attacked straight ahead to the top of the circle, where she fed the ball to Cookman.
- Maddie Priestly scored on a rebound off a penalty corner to tie the score, 1-1, at 9:02.
SECOND QUARTER
- UNH answered with a 12-3 shot advantage and 7-1 edge in corners in the second quarter, and the Wildcats scored the only goal in the quarter to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
- Cookman struck again from the same spot – this time she settled Poulakis' centering pass before sweeping a low shot into the cage – at 24:20 to put New Hampshire back in front, 2-1. Poulakis once again initiated the scoring sequence by dodging two defenders along the right endline before slipping a pass to Cookman.
THIRD QUARTER
- Both teams scored a goal in the third quarter to advance the score to 3-2 in favor of the Wildcats through 45 minutes.
- MacNeil extended UNH's lead to 3-2 at 31:41 when she kept the ball in the shooting circle on the left side and fired a shot that deflected off a defender's stick high into the cage.
- UNH generated a corner in the 35th minute and Swaan's shot from the top of the circle beat Vaandrager but Wilber made the defensive save at right post
- UVM trimmed the deficit to one goal, 3-2, when Lefranc scored off a corner at 39:04.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Vermont outscored the visitors 2-0 in the final frame with a 5-3 shot advantage.
- UVM capitalized on another penalty corner at 53:29 to level the score, 3-3, on Lefranc's direct shot from the top of the circle.
- Ross entered the game with 4:42 on the clock.
- On a UNH corner, Meijer also beat Vaandrager on a direct shot from the top of the circle, but Wilber cleared the ball off the line near right post to keep the score deadlocked with 2:12 remaining.
- Lefranc gave UVM its first lead of the game, 4-3, with 77 seconds to play.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Poulakis extended her point streak to six games with Friday's two assists. She has seven goals and six assists for 20 points during the streak.
- On UNH's career leaderboard, Poulakis is tied #4 in assists (27), is #7 in points (115), and #8 in goals (44).
- Cookman is #4 in points (125), is tied #4 in assists (27) and #6 in goals (49).
GAME NOTEBOOK
- UNH had a 23-20 shot advantage but UVM had the 14-13 edge in shots on goal.
- The Wildcats generated 11 corners and the Catamounts had 10.
